Chapter 6 - Your Body Does Not Need a Budget Request

The board chair already had the investor notice.

Richard’s counsel had also sent a preliminary governance concern.

HaleMotion’s cash release was suspended.

Vendor payments paused.

Payroll review triggered.

Bridge financing withdrawn pending audit.

The exact amount did not become public at first.

That made it worse for Victor.

Uncertainty creates its own panic.

By noon, his CFO had called him seventeen times.

By three, two board members requested emergency access to financial records.

By five, Jenna called asking whether Liam’s tournament fees had cleared.

By six, Victor texted Sarah:

You don’t understand what you’ve done.

She did not reply.

Her attorney did.

Sarah hired Nora Whitfield because Richard recommended her and because Nora’s first question was not “Are you sure?”

It was:

“Is Ethan safe tonight?”

Sarah said yes.

Nora said, “Good. Now we work from safety.”

They documented the slap.

The photo.

The torn flyer.

The tablet bag.

Ethan’s statement, taken gently by a child therapist, not by adults demanding performance.

Sarah’s history of incidents.

Victor’s financial control.

Richard’s investment documents.

The house paperwork Sarah had never fully understood.

That was when she learned how much Victor had hidden.

The Denver house was partly secured by a structure Richard had funded but Victor had leveraged without telling her.

Several business loans were tangled with personal guarantees.

Victor had moved household funds to cover HaleMotion expenses while telling Sarah money was tight.

Ethan’s college account had not been emptied, but it had been used as collateral in a way Nora described as “creatively alarming.”

Sarah stared at the documents.

“He told Ethan we couldn’t afford a cake.”

Nora looked at her.

“People who misuse money often become most violent over small honest requests.”

Sarah thought of the crushed flyer.

$24.99.

The price of a cake.

The cost of revealing everything.

Ethan did not return to the Denver house.

At first, Victor had supervised visitation.

He hated supervision.

Not because he missed Ethan privately.

Because public limitation humiliated him.

During the first session, he brought Liam.

That was not allowed.

Ethan froze when he saw the boy through the glass.

The supervisor stepped in.

Victor argued.

Session canceled.

Later, he texted Sarah:

Ethan needs to learn the world doesn’t revolve around him.

Sarah looked at the text for a long time.

Then replied:

For twelve years, it never did. That is the problem.

She blocked him after sending it.

Not legally.

Emotionally.

Through counsel from then on.

Ethan’s cheek healed quickly.

The rest did not.

He stopped asking for things.

At Richard’s house, he waited to be offered food.

He kept saying, “It’s okay,” even when it wasn’t.

He apologized when the TV was too loud, when a spoon dropped, when his sneakers squeaked on the floor.

One night, Sarah found him in the kitchen at 11 p.m., standing in front of the pantry.

“Sweetheart?”

He jumped.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“I was hungry.”

Sarah leaned against the doorway because if she moved too fast, she might cry and scare him.

“You’re allowed to be hungry.”

“I didn’t want to take something.”

“This is Grandpa’s house. He wants you fed.”

Ethan looked at the shelves.

“What if I eat something expensive?”

Sarah crossed the room slowly.

Food as permission.

Cake as rebellion.

A child measuring hunger against cost.

She knelt in front of him.

“Your body does not need a budget request.”

He smiled faintly.

“That sounds like Grandpa.”

“I’ll tell him you said so.”

They made grilled cheese at midnight.

Richard came down in a robe, saw them, and said, “If this household has secret grilled cheese meetings, I expect notice.”

Ethan laughed.

It startled all of them.

Richard opened the fridge.

“I’ll bring pickles.”

Healing started there.

Not fully.

May you like

Not beautifully.

With melted cheese, pickles, and a boy realizing hunger would not get him punished.
