Chapter 4 - The Second Secret

Vanessa tried to recover first.
That was always her gift.
Fast.
Beautiful.
Plausible.
She lowered the scissors slowly.
“Daniel, your mother asked me to help.”
Eleanor made a small sound behind him.
Daniel did not turn.
Vanessa’s eyes flicked toward Chloe.
Chloe still held the phone down by her thigh.
“Tell him,” Vanessa snapped.
Chloe blinked.
“I—”
“Tell him she asked.”
Chloe’s mouth opened.
No words came.
Daniel looked at her.
“Chloe.”
She flinched at the sound of her name.
He had never spoken to her like that.
Not loudly.
Not angrily.
Like she had just become evidence.
“Did my mother ask Vanessa to cut her hair?”
Chloe looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa’s eyes sharpened.
Chloe swallowed.
“It was supposed to be a makeover.”
Daniel stared at her.
“Was she crying before I arrived?”
Chloe’s face crumpled slightly.
“She was upset.”
“Was Vanessa laughing?”
No answer.
“Was Vanessa holding her hair so she couldn’t pull away?”
Chloe’s eyes filled.
Vanessa hissed, “Don’t you dare.”
Daniel turned back to Vanessa.
“You don’t threaten anyone else in my house.”
Vanessa laughed once.
Too high.
Too bright.
“Your house?”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
There it was.
Another door opening.
Vanessa realized she had said too much.
But panic makes people truthful in pieces.
She lifted her chin.
“We were about to be married. This was going to be my home too.”
“No,” Daniel said. “It was going to be the place where I trusted you.”
Her face tightened.
“That old woman has been poisoning you against me for months.”
Eleanor whispered, “Daniel, please.”
He turned immediately.
Not away from Vanessa.
Just enough to soften his voice.
“Mom, don’t protect her.”
“I’m protecting you.”
“That’s over.”
Eleanor pressed a shaking hand to the hacked side of her hair.
The gesture nearly broke him again.
Vanessa saw the weakness and pushed.
“She’s unstable. Everyone knows it. The stroke changed her. She gets confused. She makes things up. She says horrible things about me when you’re gone.”
Daniel looked at the hair scattered on the lawn.
“Did she cut her own hair too?”
Vanessa’s eyes flashed.
“I was trying to help her look presentable for the wedding.”
“For the wedding.”
“Yes.”
“With Chloe recording?”
“It was supposed to be sweet.”
Daniel looked at Chloe.
“Give me the phone.”
Chloe froze.
Vanessa stepped in front of her.
“No.”
Daniel held out his hand.
“Chloe.”
Chloe whispered, “Vanessa, I can’t.”
Vanessa turned sharply.
“You can’t what?”
Chloe was pale now.
“She saw him.”
Vanessa went still.
Daniel’s eyes moved from Chloe to Vanessa.
“Saw who?”
Chloe covered her mouth.
Vanessa raised the scissors slightly without realizing it.
Not toward anyone.
Just a panic grip.
Daniel saw it and stepped forward.
“Put them down.”
Vanessa looked at the scissors as if surprised they were still in her hand.
Then she dropped them.
They landed in the grass beside Eleanor’s severed hair.
The sound was small.
But it ended something.
Mrs. Alvarez came running through the side path with a garden blanket and two security guards behind her.
Daniel’s voice stayed controlled.
“Take my mother inside. Call Dr. Keene. Full exam.”
Eleanor grabbed his wrist.
“No police.”
Daniel looked down.
“Mom.”
“Please. Not yet.”
Her eyes moved toward Vanessa.
Not fear now.
Something else.
Shame.
Old shame.
The kind people carry after being made into a spectacle.
Daniel understood.
He hated it.
But he understood.
He crouched beside her.
“You are not the one who should be ashamed.”
Eleanor’s chin trembled.
“I know.”
But knowing and feeling are not the same thing.
Mrs. Alvarez wrapped the blanket around her shoulders.
Daniel gathered the cut hair from her lap carefully, as if it were something that could still be saved.
Eleanor watched him.
“It’s just hair.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
Vanessa stood rigid while the security guards waited.
Chloe was crying now.
Daniel rose.
“Vanessa, you and Chloe will wait in the east sitting room.”
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“You’re ordering me around now?”
“Yes.”
“I am pregnant with your child.”
The words detonated across the garden.
Eleanor closed her eyes.
Mrs. Alvarez froze.
Chloe looked down.
May you like
Daniel went completely still.
That was the second secret.
