CHAPTER 1

Grace Rivera heard the scream before the music downstairs had fully stopped.
It came from the bridal suite at the end of the hallway.
Sharp.
Terrified.
Wrong.
Grace was still barefoot from dancing at her son’s wedding reception, her dark navy lace dress brushing her knees as she ran down the corridor.
Behind her, Robert followed in his black suit, face drained of color.
Grace reached the closed bedroom door and pounded it with both hands.
“Caleb! Katherine! Open this door!”
No answer.
Only crying.
Then something hit the floor inside.
Grace shoved the handle.
Locked.
Robert stepped forward, but Grace hit the door again, harder this time, every calm part of her breaking into a mother’s panic.
The lock gave.
The door burst open.
The room beyond looked like a wedding magazine no one had survived.
Rose petals scattered across white sheets.
Champagne glasses still full.
Candles burning beside an untouched bed.
Katherine sat on the floor in her wedding dress, shaking so badly the lace trembled around her legs. Her loose hair stuck to her tear-wet face. One hand clutched the torn edge of her veil.
Across from her, Caleb sat on the carpet in his white shirt and black dress pants, breathing hard, head lowered like a man hiding from the thing he had just become.
Grace’s voice broke.
“My dear, what happened?”
Katherine looked up at her.
“Mom… I can’t be this man’s wife.”
Grace dropped to her knees beside her.
When she reached out, Katherine flinched.
That flinch changed everything.
Robert turned toward Caleb, horrified.
“What did you do to her?”
Caleb did not lift his head.
“I didn’t mean for this to happen.”
Grace stared at her son.
The boy she had raised.
The man she had trusted.
“What do you mean?”
Caleb’s face twisted.
Shame darkened into something colder.
“I just wanted her to be afraid.”

Katherine sobbed harder.
Grace felt the room tilt beneath her.
Frank, Robert’s older brother, appeared in the doorway and rushed inside. He helped Robert guide Katherine away from Caleb, carefully, gently, as if even the air around her might hurt.
Grace stayed where she was.
Looking at her son.
Caleb finally raised his eyes.
They were broken.
But they were angry too.
“She had to pay.”
Grace whispered, “Pay for what?”
May you like
And in that cold, rose-covered room, Grace understood the wedding had not been a celebration.
It had been a trap.
