Chapter 1

The water had been running for twenty minutes.
Freezing.
Sharp.
Merciless against Anna Caldwell’s hands.
She stood at the kitchen sink at 3:12 in the morning, nine months pregnant, sleeves soaked to the elbows, belly pressed close to the marble counter because her back could barely hold her upright anymore.
The mansion was silent around her.
Cold blue light filled the kitchen.
The dishwasher was empty.
The counters were clean.
There was no reason for Anna to be standing there except cruelty.
Behind her, Marjorie Caldwell tightened one hand in Anna’s hair.
Anna gasped as her head was yanked backward.
Then Marjorie forced her down again toward the sink, close enough that Anna could feel the spray of icy water against her face.
“Your husband is asleep now.”
Anna braced one trembling hand against the counter.
Her other arm curled protectively around her stomach.
“Please,” she whispered.

Marjorie leaned closer, silver-blonde hair neat even at this hour, dark robe tied perfectly at her waist.
“You wanted to be lady of this house. Then learn how to serve in it.”
A plate slipped from Anna’s shaking fingers.
It hit the floor and shattered.
The sound cracked through the sleeping mansion.
At the kitchen entrance, Evan Caldwell appeared barefoot in a white T-shirt and dark pajama pants, hair messy, eyes half-awake.
Then he saw them.
His wife bent over the sink.
His mother’s fist in her hair.
Anna’s wet sleeves.
Her shaking body.
The broken plate at her feet.
The fear in her eyes when she looked at him.
Evan went completely still.
“Mom… what are you doing?”
Marjorie turned her head slowly, but she did not let go.
That was the part Evan would remember forever.
She did not even pretend.
She jerked Anna’s head once more toward the sink, as if proving she still had the right.
“She needs to learn her place.”
Anna cried harder, one arm wrapped around her belly, shoulders shaking.
Something in Evan’s face broke.
Then hardened.
He crossed the kitchen fast.
Marjorie barely had time to react before he grabbed her wrist and pulled her hand away from Anna’s hair.
“Take your hands off my wife.”
He moved his body between them and forced his mother backward.
Marjorie stumbled into a chair, shocked.
Anna collapsed against the counter, breathing hard, one hand gripping the sink, the other pressed over her belly.
The running water filled the silence.
Evan stood in front of Anna like a wall.
His arm extended slightly behind him, shielding her without touching too hard.
Marjorie stared at him in disbelief.
For the first time in that house, her son was not looking at her like a mother.
He was looking at her like a threat.
His voice dropped cold.
“You are never touching her again.”
May you like
The kitchen fell dead silent.
And Anna finally understood that the house had heard her.
