Chapter 8 - It’s Just a Pool

But Ethan knew the deeper victory was quieter.

It was not Meredith being removed from the mansion.

It was not the trust clause locking her out.

It was not even the recording proving Lucy had been targeted.

It was Lucy hearing her father say, I believe you.

It was Mrs. Alden recording before fear could rewrite the day.

It was a hidden daughter becoming publicly protected.

It was Ethan understanding that secrecy had kept Lucy safe once, but silence would endanger her now.

And it was Lucy, years later, standing beside the same pool on Ethan’s birthday, wearing two pink sandals and holding a slice of cake.

“Dad?” she said.

Ethan looked up.

“Yes?”

“Can we invite my friends next year?”

He smiled.

“To the pool?”

Lucy looked at the water.

Then at Mrs. Alden, who was pretending not to listen from the doorway.

Then back at Ethan.

“Yes.”

His throat tightened.

“You sure?”

Lucy nodded.

“It’s just a pool.”

For a second, Ethan could not speak.

Because that was healing.

Not forgetting.

Not pretending.

Just shrinking the monster back into an object.

A pool.

Water.

Sunlight.

A place where laughter could return without erasing what happened.

He kissed the top of her head.

“Then next year,” he said, “we invite everyone you want.”

Lucy grinned.

“And no white dresses.”

Mrs. Alden coughed from the doorway.

May you like

Ethan laughed.

For the first time in years, the terrace sounded like a birthday again.
