Chapter 10 - Better Records

Margaret sat at the kitchen table, sunlight warming her pearls.

The phone lay nearby, as it always did.

Not face-down anymore.

Not hiding.

Just present.

Daniel poured tea.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Thank you for letting me mark the door.”

She looked toward the pantry.

Then back at him.

“This house keeps records,” she said. “Let’s make better ones.”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

He nodded.

Outside, the maple tree moved softly in the afternoon wind.

Inside, the marble table held no deeds, no loan guarantees, no black pen waiting like a trap.

Only tea.
