Chapter 1 - The strike at the table

Warm evening light settled over the private dining conservatory of the Charleston waterfront estate, softening the candles on the elegant round table and catching the glass walls with reflections of the garden beyond. Claire Bennett sat at the table in her white silk blouse and black skirt, her posture straight even though her nerves were already fraying. Eleanor Bennett sat beside her in a champagne lace dress, unaware that the dinner had reached the point Claire had been dreading for weeks.

Marcus stood behind Claire.

He still held the white ceramic dinner plate in one hand.

His voice came low and vicious, meant less to convince than to dominate. “YOU SHOULD’VE LEARNED WHEN TO SHUT YOUR MOUTH.”

Only after he finished did he swing the plate.

It struck the side of Claire’s head hard enough to break on impact. The sound cracked through the conservatory, sharp and intimate in a room with only three people in it. Claire recoiled, her shoulder tensing, but she stayed seated. A few broken fragments dropped onto the walnut floor beside her chair. She did not scream. She only lifted the white napkin from her lap and pressed it carefully against the side of her face.

A small red streak bloomed near her ear.

Her hand trembled once, then steadied.

When she spoke, her voice was quieter than his, and that made it land harder. “You really hit your wife in front of your mother.”

Marcus remained behind her, chest rising too fast, the rage still alive in him. Beside Claire, Eleanor turned in her chair and stared at her son in open horror.

“Marcus, what the hell is wrong with you?”

He turned toward Eleanor with the same anger, leaning in and jabbing one finger past her toward Claire as if his mother were now just another obstacle in the room. “STAY OUT OF IT. SHE’S NOTHING TO THIS FAMILY.”

That sentence finished something in Claire.

She lowered the napkin, looked down, and reached for her black smartphone on the table. Marcus noticed immediately, but for the first time all evening, suspicion interrupted his certainty. Claire lifted the phone to her ear and waited through one ring, then another.

Marcus stared at her.

Eleanor stared at him.

When the call connected, Claire looked directly at her husband.

“Robert?” she said coldly. “Your son did it again.”

Marcus froze.

The blood seemed to drain from his face faster than it had from hers.

Beside Claire, Eleanor slowly turned toward him, and in the silence after those six words, she understood something terrible all at once: whatever had just happened in front of her was not a first, and somebody in the family had known that long before she did.
