Chapter 1 - the strike beside the child

Warm late-afternoon light spilled across the great-room hall of the Colorado alpine estate, catching the dark timber floors, the massive stone fireplace, and the cream furniture arranged beneath the mountain-view windows. Lily Carter sat crying on the floor beside the hearth, her pale-pink knit dress bunched beneath her and her white tights streaked with dust where she had tried to scramble back. Standing over her was Victoria Carter in a fitted royal-blue satin dress, gripping a short silver fireplace poker in both hands.

Before Lily could retreat any farther, Grace Miller rushed in from the side hallway. She dropped to her knees beside the child, pulled Lily tightly against her chest, and twisted her own body between the girl and the raised metal poker.

Victoria glared down at both of them with open disgust. “MOVE. THAT USELESS LITTLE BRAT NEEDS TO LEARN FEAR.”

Grace tightened her arms around Lily, who buried her face against the housekeeper’s shoulder and cried harder. Grace did not move. She looked straight at Victoria and said, “YOU’RE NOT TOUCHING HER.”

Victoria’s face twisted with rage. Gripping the same fireplace poker with both hands, she raised it high and brought it down in one hard, violent strike directly into the wooden floor beside Grace.

The impact cracked through the room with a brutal bang.

Grace flinched. Lily screamed. But neither of them was hit.

Victoria yanked the poker back up and screamed, “SHE’S NOTHING. AND YOU’RE JUST THE HELP.”

At that exact moment, the wide double doors at the far end of the room opened. Daniel Carter entered from the private family corridor and froze for half a second as the whole scene landed in front of him: his daughter crying on the floor, Grace shielding her with her own body, and Victoria looming over them with the raised poker.

Then his face changed.

He strode directly toward them and barked, “PUT IT DOWN. NOW.”

Victoria turned toward him, still holding the poker, utterly defiant. “YOUR DAUGHTER’S WEAK. I WAS FIXING WHAT YOU FAILED TO.”

Daniel waited until she finished speaking.

Then he slapped her.

It was fast, hard, and decisive. Victoria’s head snapped sideways. She lost balance and crashed onto the timber floor. The silver poker flew from her hand and skidded several feet away across the boards.

Grace remained behind Daniel, still holding Lily tightly and safely against her.

Victoria stayed on the floor, stunned for the first time since he had entered.

Daniel stepped directly between her and the two people behind him. He looked down at her with controlled fury, and when he bent slightly toward her, his expression had gone completely cold.

“YOU’RE DONE. GET OUT.”

Victoria froze.

May you like

The arrogance drained out of her face all at once as she looked past him toward Lily and Grace, suddenly understanding that whatever power she thought she held over that house had just broken in front of witnesses.
