Chapter 11 - Why She Risked Everything

When Marlene finally spoke the truth, it came out ugly.

Not clean.

Not noble.

Not even particularly smart.

She had debts.

Massive ones.

Bad investments.

Private loans.

A lifestyle she couldn’t sustain without access to Everett’s orbit, Everett’s generosity, and eventually Everett’s assets.

But debt alone hadn’t driven her.

Pride had.

Everett had recently told her he planned to audit several charitable event accounts she had overseen. He had also made it clear he would never sign broad control of the vineyards over to her.

Worse—for Marlene—he had started distancing himself socially.

She understood what was coming.

Less access.

Less influence.

Less money.

So she decided not to wait.

“You were going to leave me with nothing,” she hissed.

Everett stared at her in disbelief.

“I was going to stop you from handling accounts you were never entitled to control.”

“You used me.”

“No,” he said coldly. “I trusted you.”

She flinched.

Then Everett added something that silenced the whole room:

“And tonight, you tried to turn that trust into a weapon.”

Marlene’s eyes shifted to me again.

“This is because of her.”

“No,” Everett said sharply. “This is because of you. She only forced it into the light.”

That was the second time that night someone with real power refused to let her drag me into blame for what she had done herself.

I didn’t know it then, but that sentence would stay with me for years.
