Chapter 14 - THERESA’S SETTLEMENT

Theresa settled civil fiduciary claims. She agreed to repay disputed fees and excess charges.

Surrendered permanent trustee authority. Waived objections to independent governance.

Returned a portion of house contributions to trust, which then reimbursed me and Mitchell according to accounting. No criminal conviction on broad trust mismanagement because prosecutors distinguished civil breach from provable theft.

She hated that people called her criminal anyway. Public judgment is sloppy.

Legal judgment less satisfying but more accurate. Then one separate charge related to directing Paula? Evidence insufficient to prove beyond Sophie's role. Theresa avoided criminal liability for forgery itself.

That frustrated me at first. Then Maya said: “Your need for moral symmetry is not evidence.”

Right. Theresa’s consequences were civil, financial, reputational, and familial.

She lost trustee control. Paid large restitution.

Lost relationship with Mitchell for a period. Lost house access.

Lost Sophie as loyal employee. Lost narrative. Not prison. Enough.

Then Theresa wrote me. I almost deleted unread.

Then opened. Danielle, I disliked you because you made Mitchell less dependent on me.

There. No childhood story first.

Good. Then: When you questioned house payments, I heard disrespect. When you asked about investments, I heard threat. When you wanted your own holiday traditions, I heard replacement.

Honest. Then: I convinced myself you were temporary.

That explained everything. If I was temporary, forged waiver felt less serious.

If Evelyn was unstable, blocked contact felt protective. If Mitchell was immature, control felt necessary.

Every person reduced to adjective. Then Theresa addressed the pot.

I threw it because I wanted to remind you whose household you were in. That was the clearest admission of the original dynamic.

Then: It was not my household. Exactly.

Even if trust owned house, she did not own people. Then apology.

No request for contact. I accepted that she wrote it.

Did not respond. Then months later, Mitchell asked through Maya whether I would object if Theresa attended a trust mediation event where I had a reimbursement claim.

“No.” I could be in a room with her.

That was different from relationship. At the event, we saw each other.

She looked smaller without control. Still elegant.

She said: “Hello, Danielle.” “Theresa.” Then nothing. Perfect.

No showdown. No slap.

No speech. The absence of drama was its own boundary.

Then the independent trust distributed my final reimbursement. Sixty-three thousand dollars after offsets and taxes? Reimbursement likely not tax? Don't overdo. Amount around 63k.

I used part to pay legal fees. Part into savings.

Part on a vacation alone. Italy.

Why? Because I wanted somewhere no Carter had a key.

Then on the trip, I bought a red lipstick. I had avoided red for a year because Sophie wore it.

That annoyed me. So I bought the brightest shade I could find.

Wore it to dinner. No symbolism beyond reclaiming color.

Sometimes healing is petty. Fine.
