Chapter 17 - MARCUS AFTER VANCE

Marcus’s officer restriction expired years later. He did not return to Vance MedCore.

Instead, he joined a small manufacturing company as operations adviser. No family name on door.

No mother. No inherited board votes.

He did well. I learned only because a business article mentioned him.

Then he launched a consulting firm. Again.

No drama. He paid remaining restitution and fines.

Then Marcus and Clara began having dinner every few months. Slow.

Clara told me he no longer talked about “saving the company.” He talked about what he did.

Good. Then Evelyn joined one dinner.

Clara left after forty minutes. Too much.

Next time, no Evelyn. Boundaries.

Then Marcus started dating. A woman named Rachel Porter, a community-college dean.

He told her his history early. Apparently she asked: “Did you ever hit Danielle?”

He said no. “Did you threaten?” “Yes.” “Track?” “Yes.” “Forge?”

“Participated in documents with forged signature.” Precise.

Then she said: “I need time.” He gave it.

They dated later. No idea if married.

Not my concern. Then one day he asked Clara whether he should contact me for apology anniversary? Weird. Clara told him no.

Good. Then years later, we crossed paths at a hospital logistics conference.

Unexpected. He was there with client.

I was chair of panel. Afterward he approached from distance. “Hi.” “Hi.”

No pulse spike. That surprised me.

Then: “You look well.” “So do you.”

Then silence. He said: “I won’t keep you.” Good. Then left.

No closure speech. No hug.

That was closure. Then I told Aaron.

May you like

He asked: “How’d it feel?” “Like seeing someone from college.” He smiled. “Good.”

That was when I knew Marcus had become history instead of unfinished argument.
