Chapter 4 - Lily Saw What The Adults Kept Rationalizing
My little sister never liked Robert.
Children are sometimes unreliable judges of complicated adult relationships.
Other times, they notice the simplest truth before everyone else.
Lily said Robert smiled differently when I disagreed with him.
“What does that mean?”
“His mouth smiles but his eyes get mad.”
I laughed the first time.
Then I started noticing it.
Two weeks before the wedding, Lily was at Robert’s estate with me while we reviewed decorations.
She wandered into the library looking for colored pencils.
Robert and I were arguing quietly.
I had told him I wanted to keep my own apartment near campus until the semester ended.
He said that would be humiliating.
“It’s eight weeks.”
“You’ll be my wife.”
“And a student.”
“A wife lives with her husband.”
I said I did not want to debate it.
Robert reached over and closed my laptop.
Not violently.
Just deliberately.
“You don’t end conversations because they become uncomfortable.”
Lily appeared in the doorway.
Robert changed instantly.
“Hey, sweetheart.”
Lily looked at the closed laptop.
Then at me.
That evening she told Dad:
“Robert gets scary when Claire says no.”
Dad called me.
I accused him of using a seven-year-old to interfere in my relationship.
He sounded devastated.
“I didn’t ask her anything. She told me.”
I nearly canceled the wedding that night.
Then Robert came over.
He cried.
That surprised me.
He said he was terrified of losing me.
Said his age made him insecure.
Said he knew I had more future than he did.
Then:
“Sometimes I hold too tightly because I know how easily you could leave.”
I mistook self-awareness for change.
