Chapter 5 - Her Mother Had Seen Celeste Coming
Marianne Arden kept paper.
Thomas kept everything digitally.
Marianne trusted yellow legal pads, fountain pens, and the old locking file cabinet in her home office.
After her death, Celeste arranged for the mansion to be cleared before Elena returned from the hospital.
Most of Marianne’s files were boxed and stored.
Nobody considered them important.
Marcus did.
He remembered where the boxes went.
A climate-controlled storage unit in Port Chester still held nineteen cartons labeled ARDEN PERSONAL.
Dana sent a paralegal and a document technician.
Elena did not go.
She waited two days before Dana called.
“Your mother kept handwritten board preparation notes.”
Elena closed her eyes.
“What did she write?”
“A lot.”
The relevant pages covered a proposal Celeste brought to the board six weeks before Thomas and Marianne died.
Celeste wanted Arden House to partner with Bellwether on a portfolio of distressed luxury properties.
Bellwether would provide capital.
Arden House would provide management.
Thomas liked the idea.
Marianne did not.
Her notes contained three underlined questions:
Who controls Bellwether?
Why is Julian on both sides?
Why does Celeste want borrowing subsidiaries outside consolidated reporting?
Elena read the scanned page in silence.
There were the first three clues.
Bellwether had existed before the default.
Celeste’s adviser was involved before the default.
Marianne had questioned subsidiary structure before the default.
Her mother had not known exactly what Celeste intended.
She had known enough to worry.
There was one more line near the bottom.
Robert agrees. Thomas thinks I’m overreacting.
Elena laughed once.
It hurt.
“Dad thought Mom overreacted?”
Robert sat across from her in Dana’s conference room.
“Your father loved Celeste.”
“Why?”
Robert gave her a tired look.
“Because she made him feel daring.”
Celeste was Thomas’s younger sister.
He was careful.
She was bold.
He built Arden House by controlling details.
Celeste expanded it by walking into rooms and convincing people rules were temporary.
Thomas admired the quality he should have monitored.
Elena had inherited his mistake.
Robert continued.
“Marianne wanted the Bellwether deal stopped.”
“Did Dad stop it?”
“Eventually.”
“Then why did Bellwether keep appearing?”
Robert looked down.
“Because Celeste didn’t stop.”
That was the hidden truth beginning to take shape.
Celeste’s misconduct had not started after Elena’s parents died.
It had started while they were alive.
Dana leaned forward.
“There’s another complication.”
Elena already hated the word.
“Your father did authorize one Bellwether transaction.”
Elena stared at her.
“After Mom objected?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Robert’s eyes dropped.
“Because Celeste convinced him the company needed emergency liquidity.”
Elena felt the story tilt.
