Chapter 1 - The Bride Richard Wasn’t Looking At Until Claire Called

The sound of tearing satin cut through the wedding hall before Claire Morgan understood what Eleanor had done.
Eleanor’s hand was buried in a fistful of Claire’s deep-blue maternity gown. With one vicious downward yank, the older woman ripped a wide section of fabric loose from the skirt.
Claire gasped.
Her hands went instantly to her stomach.
At thirty-one weeks pregnant, every sudden movement triggered the same instinct now: protect the baby first, process humiliation later.
A strip of blue satin dropped onto the polished marble.
“You don’t belong in this family,” Eleanor said.
Claire stared at the woman who had been her mother-in-law for almost seven years.
Then movement came from the center aisle.
Sophia Reed.
Claire’s former best friend.
The woman who had spent two years listening to Claire cry about her marriage.
The woman who had begun sleeping with Adrian Morgan while still sending Claire late-night messages about “fighting for what you deserve.”
And now the woman wearing the ivory wedding gown.
Sophia hurried toward Claire.
For one stupid second, Claire thought she might help.
Sophia bent, snatched the torn pieces of blue satin from the floor, and threw them directly into Claire’s face.
The cloth brushed her cheek and collapsed over her lap.
“Try not to flash everyone, sweetheart.”
Sophia straightened.
Smiling.
Claire pushed the fabric away with one trembling hand while the other remained over her belly.
She had already lost Adrian.
She had already lost the house.
Most of their mutual friends had chosen whichever version of the divorce required less discomfort.
But there was something Sophia did not know.
Claire had found the envelope that morning.
And she had finally understood why the divorce paperwork had moved so quickly.
She pulled out her phone.
Eleanor noticed immediately.
“What are you doing?”
Claire ignored her.
One contact.
Richard Morgan.
He answered on the second ring.
“Claire?”
She could barely keep her voice steady.
“Richard… please come now.”
A pause.
Then:
“Where are you?”
“The reception hall.”
Another pause.
“Do not leave.”
Claire looked at Sophia.
“I’m not going anywhere.”
Sophia’s smile faltered.
Eleanor’s attention sharpened.
Claire ended the call.
“What did you tell him?” Sophia asked.
Claire did not answer.
Three minutes? No. It felt like three minutes.
It was less than thirty seconds before the large double doors at the far end of the hall opened.
Richard Morgan stood there.
Tall.
Balding.
Black formal suit.
The groom’s father.
Adrian’s father.
Claire’s former father-in-law.
Richard looked down the central aisle.
He saw Claire first.
Pregnant.
Crying.
Holding torn blue satin against herself.
Then Eleanor beside her.
Then Sophia in the wedding gown.
His expression hardened.
He started walking.
Sophia regained her composure.
Of course she did.
She had spent the past year convincing herself the Morgans had chosen her.
She stepped forward as Richard reached them, almost as if expecting protection from Claire’s intrusion.
“Richard, she came here to—”
He slapped her.
Once.
Hard.
Sophia’s head snapped sideways.
Her veil shifted across one shoulder.
The smugness disappeared.
She slowly looked back at him.
Richard was not looking at the torn dress.
He was not looking at Eleanor.
His eyes were fixed on Sophia as though the entire wedding hall had vanished.
“You.”
One word.
Sophia’s face drained of color.
Claire froze behind them.
Eleanor’s expression changed too.
Not shock at the slap.
Recognition.
As if she suddenly understood exactly what Richard had discovered.

And for the first time that afternoon, Sophia Reed looked more frightened than Claire.
