Chapter 9 - Victoria Was Responsible—But the House Had Rewarded Exactly What She Became

This was the part people dislike.
Systems do not excuse:
people.
People also do not act outside:
systems.
Victoria chose to:
copy signatures.
Hide the museum deed.
Misuse reserve funds.
Alter wording.
Conceal conflicts.
No compensation plan forced:
that.
Still, Crown & Bell had rewarded:
volume,
client retention,
headline prices.
Provenance teams were treated as:
support functions.
Senior rainmakers overruled them.
Dad had inherited some of that culture.
Then improved parts.
Not enough.
The independent review recommended:
changes.
No sale specialist could unilaterally weaken documented provenance concerns.
Material changes required provenance:
sign-off.
Related-party advisers disclosed.
Guarantee fees reviewed independently.
Client reserve funds:
segregated.
No executive could approve settlement from those reserves.
Bonuses now included:
compliance,
client restitution exposure,
employee retention
and catalog accuracy.
Less glamorous.
Better.
Then HR.
Victoria’s treatment of junior employees was reviewed separately.
Again:
important.
Financial misconduct did not need to be the only reason staff deserved:
protection.
Seven former employees agreed to:
interviews.
Patterns.
Public insults.
Career threats.
Punitive assignments.
No physical violence.
No fantasy.
Workplace:
bullying.
One former assistant said:
“Victoria could make you feel like your mistake proved your class background.”
That sounded like:
her.
Then my firing.
I had actually been within probationary authority?
No.
Victoria could recommend termination.
Not complete it unilaterally without:
HR.
She had been bluffing when she threw my badge.
Another status performance.
She believed saying:
“You’re fired”
made it true.
It didn’t.
HR had never processed:
anything.
My torn badge became:
evidence
in the workplace review.
I hated that.
I wanted to throw it:
away.
Then I realized why.
The badge reminded me how much satisfaction I had felt when Dad picked it up.
Not because my firing was wrong.
Because:
Henry Morgan arrived.
The scene risked teaching the wrong:
lesson.
Don’t humiliate junior employees because one might secretly be the owner’s:
daughter.
No.
A junior catalog specialist’s questions mattered even if her father repaired:
elevators.
Nora’s questions mattered.
Rachel’s provenance memo mattered.
Joanne? different story. Here Rachel.
Then Dad asked me to sit in on a listening session with former junior:
staff.
I declined.
“Why?”
“Because I’m not neutral.”
“You experienced it too.”
“Yes.”
“But they also know I’m your daughter.”
That changed:
the room.
Good.
The session happened without:
me.
Then Dad shared only the recommendations, not private:
stories.
Boundary.
Then my mother entered the story again.
The trust’s archive contained a letter she wrote to:
Dad
during her final year.
Not about Victoria specifically.
About:
me.
Charlotte will probably choose art because she likes questions more than answers. Please don’t buy her certainty when she gets scared.
Dad smiled when he read:
that.
I almost cried.
Then:
If she works in our world, make sure she knows the family name can open doors and still make her worse at seeing what happens to people without one.
That line felt:
personal.
Then the next paragraph:
The best catalogers are not the ones who know everything. They are the ones who are willing to write “unknown” when everyone in the room wants a better story.
That became:
mine.
Then the board called Dad.
Victoria wanted:
mediation.
She was prepared to admit specific:
conduct.
Not because she had suddenly become:
kind.
Because the evidence was:
strong
and her employment settlement depended on truthfulness.
She asked that I attend.
I almost said:
no.
Then agreed to one:
session.
There, Victoria told me why she had fired me before she knew who my father was.
She had already realized I was the only junior specialist still refusing to approve the North Window provenance.
And she believed humiliating me would make me leave before I could force someone senior to:
May you like
look.
