Chapter 9 - Damiano Ended the Engagement for a Reason That Had Nothing to Do With Me

Bianca assumed Damiano would forgive the dinner.
Not the same night.
Eventually.
She was wrong.
But he did not end the engagement because:
I demanded it.
I never did.
That mattered to me.
If Damiano chose me over Bianca, the family would repeat:
the competition she already feared.
Widow versus fiancée.
Niece versus future wife.
Old family versus new.
I refused.
Damiano took nine days.
He met Bianca:
twice.
Without me.
Then he came to my wing one evening.
“It's over.”
I looked up.
“With Bianca?”
“Yes.”
I felt:
relief.
Then guilt about relief.
“Why?”
“Not because of the house.”
I waited.
He sat opposite me.
“I asked her one question.”
“What?”
“If you and Emma moved tomorrow, would she still believe throwing Emma’s rabbit was acceptable because Emma was misbehaving?”
“What did she say?”
“She said:
‘I shouldn’t have thrown it, but somebody needed to stop the way that child controls the room.’”
I closed my eyes.
Damiano continued.
“Then she said:
‘You always choose guilt over me.’”
He looked tired.
“She wasn’t entirely wrong.”
No.
“She also told me I could not build a marriage while treating Luca’s family as permanently untouchable.”
Also not entirely wrong.
Damiano said:
“I could work on that with someone.”
He looked at me.
“I cannot marry someone who needs a six-year-old reduced in order to feel secure.”
That was the line.
Not:
she insulted Sophia.
Not:
she challenged property rights.
Emma.
Damiano ended it.
Bianca moved out of her Manhattan apartment he had helped furnish? No—hers. She had her own life, her own money. Good. She returned the ring? His engagement ring perhaps, but no need.
She did not become:
destitute.
She was successful in luxury fashion consulting.
She issued no public statement.
There was no scandal outside:
family and a few close friends.
Months later, through counsel addressing remaining wedding vendor cancellations, she sent me:
a short written apology.
Not sentimental.
I was cruel to Emma because I resented an adult situation she did not create. There is no defense for that.
I believed the sentence.
I did not invite her back into our lives.
Understanding is not access.
Damiano grieved the relationship quietly.
I let him.
I did not say:
You’re better off.
I had hated when people said that about Luca’s death.

Loss can still be loss even when leaving is right.
