Chapter 6 - JENNIFER’S TESTIMONY
Jennifer asked to speak with Olivia.
The request came through lawyers.
Olivia said no.
Jennifer offered to testify fully against Robert and Mark.
Olivia still said no.
Then Jennifer sent a recorded statement.
Olivia listened with Dr. Patel present.
Jennifer described the day of the original fall.
She heard Olivia scream near the boathouse.
Robert carried her inside.
Olivia could not move her right arm.
Jennifer wanted an ambulance.
Robert refused because Tyler had been drinking from a bottle stolen from the house.
Police might ask questions.
Child services might investigate.
Robert called Mark.
Mark arrived with two assistants and equipment.
He said Olivia had a spinal fracture.
He said an experimental support could help.
He said the hospital would perform dangerous surgery and might report the parents.
Robert chose the basement procedure.
Jennifer signed.
During the operation, Olivia’s heart rhythm became unstable.
Jennifer tried to stop them.
Robert told her leaving would kill Olivia.
Afterward, Mark said the implant had not seated properly.
He recommended a hospital if symptoms worsened.
Symptoms worsened.
Jennifer saw them.
She did nothing.
“I told myself she was healing,” Jennifer said in the recording. “Then I told myself she was sensitive. Then I told myself she was lying. Every lie was easier than admitting what I had allowed.”
Olivia paused the recording.
Dr. Patel asked, “Do you want to continue?”
“Yes.”
Jennifer admitted helping destroy imaging records.
She called doctors and canceled appointments.
She told school nurses Olivia had anxiety.
She hid medication in food when Olivia’s pain became severe.
She kicked the dirty rag toward Olivia after the staircase fall because Robert was watching.
Because she had trained herself to stand beside him whenever he hurt someone.
Because choosing Olivia in that moment would mean admitting she had failed to choose her for eight years.
Jennifer ended with:
“I am not asking you to forgive me. I am asking you to believe that I know what I did.”
Olivia turned off the recording.
She felt no relief.
Only exhaustion.
At the preliminary hearing, Jennifer testified against Robert and Mark.
She described the basement procedure.
The payments.
The threats.
The cover-up.
The defense attacked her credibility.
They showed she benefited financially.
She admitted it.
They showed she signed consent forms.
She admitted it.
They showed she dismissed Olivia’s pain.
She admitted it.
Then Robert’s attorney asked, “Why should anyone believe you now?”
Jennifer looked toward Olivia.
“Because my daughter said the truth for eight years, and I spent eight years making her sound unreliable.”
