Chapter 3 - Vanessa Built a Wall Around Me and Called It “Protection”

Vanessa and I were not together when Hannah became:

pregnant.

That distinction mattered.

Vanessa was:

my employee,

my friend,

one of the first people who believed Walker Response could become something.

She was twenty-six.

Brilliant.

Relentless.

Organized in the way I was:

not.

I trusted:

her.

Too much.

Was she already in love with:

me?

Years later she admitted:

yes.

At the time, I did not:

know.

The email rule was real.

Archived administrator notes:

Redirect Hannah Carter / Carter H. communications to V. Walker executive review folder.

Vanessa’s surname then was:

Bennett.

She had not yet become:

Walker.

No operational reason existed for:

that filter.

Then another filter:

Mia Carter.

Added eight months later.

Mia was an:

infant.

Why filter her name?

Because Hannah had started sending:

updates.

Not constantly.

Birthday photo.

Medical question.

A request for Ethan’s family health history.

Those emails never reached:

me.

Vanessa replied to some.

Ignored:

others.

One message from Hannah:

Mia has a heart murmur. The pediatrician wants paternal history. I don’t need money. I need medical information.

Vanessa answered:

No known hereditary cardiac issues. Please respect Ethan’s boundary.

The medical information was:

correct.

Vanessa knew it because she handled:

company insurance forms.

That made the deception more believable.

Hannah had no reason to think a stranger would know my family health history unless:

I had authorized her.

Then came:

photographs.

Hannah sent one when Mia was:

six months old.

I opened the recovered image.

Baby.

Brown hair.

Huge eyes.

A tiny dimple in:

her chin.

My mother had the same:

dimple.

So did:

I.

Vanessa replied:

Please stop sending photos. Ethan finds this manipulative.

I closed the laptop.

Could not speak.

David waited.

Then:

“Ethan, there’s more.”

Vanessa later told Hannah the company’s lawyers had advised that further direct contact could be viewed as:

harassment.

No lawyer had said:

that.

She used company letterhead in one email.

Not a formal threat.

Enough.

Hannah stopped:

writing.

For almost:

four years.

Then circumstances changed.

Walker Response grew.

Government contracts.

Industrial clients.

Acquisitions.

My name appeared in:

business media.

Hannah saw an interview.

The reporter asked whether I had:

children.

I answered:

“No.”

Apparently I laughed and said:

“Maybe someday.”

Hannah later told me that was the moment she first wondered whether I had truly known about:

Mia.

She said:

“You didn’t look like a man hiding a daughter.”

She contacted:

Vanessa.

Not me.

Why?

Because Vanessa had spent years convincing her every route to Ethan ran through:

her.

Hannah wrote:

Does Ethan really know Mia exists?

Vanessa answered:

Do not start this again.

Not:

yes.

Not:

no.

Hannah pressed.

Then Vanessa met her in person again.

Chicago.

Six years after:

Mia’s birth.

This time money came from:

Vanessa personally.

$75,000.

Why?

Vanessa called it:

education support.

Hannah called it:

hush money.

The bank memo said:

Private family settlement.

Hannah accepted:

$40,000.

Returned:

$35,000.

That surprised:

me.

Why return part?

Her handwritten note:

I needed money after Sophie was born. I hated taking it. Returned what I could after realizing Vanessa might be lying about Ethan.

Sophie.

The baby in:

Mia’s arms.

She was Hannah’s younger daughter from a later relationship that had already:

ended.

Not mine.

At least nobody claimed:

she was.

Still, Vanessa’s second payment happened when Hannah was financially:

vulnerable.

Then Hannah tried a different route.

Certified letter.

Addressed directly to:

me

at Walker Response headquarters.

No email.

No Vanessa.

It was signed for.

By:

Vanessa’s executive assistant.

Internal mail log showed:

delivery.

I never received:

it.

Inside Hannah wrote:

If you truly do not want a relationship with Mia, tell me yourself. I will stop trying. I need to hear it from you, not Vanessa.

No response.

Because I never saw:

it.

Hannah took my silence as:

confirmation.

That was what finally broke:

me.

Then David showed me the mail-routing note.

Handwritten by Vanessa:

Personal nuisance. Do not forward to E.W.

Nuisance.

My daughter.

Then the question became:

why keep the lie alive for nine years?

Jealousy explained:

the beginning.

It did not fully explain:

the end.

The answer appeared in a file Vanessa opened only three weeks before:

our wedding.

May you like

My estate plan.
