Catherine called the company controller from her private cell while sitting in the estate garden where Serena could see her but not hear her.

She learned three things in ten minutes.

First, the suspicious expense stream had continued after Catherine’s hospitalization, which meant Serena either believed the danger had passed or had grown desperate enough not to stop.

Second, a junior accountant named Melissa had recently tried to flag reimbursement issues involving the same shell LLC and was told by Serena to route future questions through “household management” instead of finance.

That was absurd.

Third, one reimbursement file included a signed approval code that appeared to be Michael’s but had been submitted on days he was traveling without access to the internal system.

“Do you think his signature was forged?” Catherine asked.

“I think his approval credentials were used by someone else,” the controller said carefully.

That phrasing was precise and responsible. It also told Catherine everything she needed.

Serena’s problem was no longer just lifestyle theft. If she was using Michael’s credentials or directing false approvals through company systems, the matter moved closer to fraud and potentially criminal exposure. Catherine had already begun asking questions before she collapsed. If she regained full footing and took the issue to the board, Serena’s access to the family, to the money, and possibly to her own freedom could be at risk.

That afternoon Catherine requested copies of the reimbursement records be sent to an outside attorney who had handled governance matters for the family for years. She did not tell Michael yet. She wanted clean preservation of documents first.

Serena must have sensed something shifting.

At dinner that night, she barely ate. She watched Catherine with flat, glittering eyes and asked twice whether she felt “strong enough to travel home soon.”

Catherine smiled.

“I’m getting stronger every day.”

Serena looked away too quickly.

That was when Catherine understood the emotional center of Serena’s behavior. This was not mainly about hating a mother-in-law or wanting status. Serena had built a secret private life funded through disguised company spending, and Catherine had become the one person in the family with enough knowledge, authority, and stubbornness to expose it.
