Chapter 3 - THE GRAVE WITHOUT A RING

Rafael died seven years earlier after falling from the upstairs balcony of our Pasadena home.
The police called it an accident.
He had been drinking wine.
The railing was old.
I found him on the patio before dawn.
Mauricio arrived twenty minutes later.
Dr. Cross pronounced death at the hospital.
No autopsy.
Rafael’s medical history included dizziness.
Cross said the fall required no further investigation.
I believed him because grief makes certainty attractive.
The exhumation changed everything.
Rafael’s coffin contained no wedding ring.
The funeral-home records said the ring remained on his hand.
A photograph from the viewing confirmed it.
Someone removed it after burial.
The cemetery security logs showed a maintenance entry two weeks after the funeral.
Authorized by Mauricio.
Reason:
FAMILY JEWELRY RECOVERY.
My son had opened his father’s grave.
Why?
He claimed the ring held a hidden compartment.
Rafael designed it years earlier.
Inside was a microfilm strip containing account codes.
He used the ring as a backup for offshore restaurant investments.
Mauricio said he recovered it because I was too grief-stricken to understand.
Then used the codes to locate dormant assets.
Those assets became the first money he stole.
But the blood on the ring was not cemetery contamination.
It matched Rafael.
And the pattern suggested contact before death.
Detective Nolan reopened the fall.
The balcony railing had been replaced after the funeral.
Mauricio arranged the repair.
The original wood was gone.
Then Priya found an old insurance photograph from two months before Rafael’s death.
The railing was intact.
No rot.
No weakness.
A contractor’s invoice showed someone loosened the support bolts three days before the fall.
Customer:
V.R. Holdings.
Valeria’s company did not exist publicly then.
But the registration document had been filed six months earlier.
Manager:
Valeria Soto.
Before she married Mauricio.
Before Rafael died.
Valeria had known my son longer than I realized.
Mauricio told me they met at a charity dinner five years ago.
Phone records showed contact eight years earlier.
She had been his secret partner while Rafael lived.
Then Cross’s medication records revealed Rafael received the same sedative later given to me.
A stronger dose.
The night he died, his blood-alcohol level was low.
Not enough to explain a fall.
The sedative was never tested.
Cross controlled the report.
The case became suspected murder.
Valeria requested a deal.
She said Mauricio planned the railing.
Mauricio said Valeria did.
Cross remained missing.
Calvin remained missing.
Each person blamed the absent ones.
Then Rafael’s microfilm codes led investigators to a hidden account.
Twelve million dollars.
Untouched.
The account beneficiary was not me.
Not Mauricio.
A woman named Sofia Alvarez.
I knew the name.
Rafael’s first love.
The woman he nearly married before meeting me.
I had believed she moved to Spain.
She lived in Santa Barbara.
Seventy years old.
She opened the door when Priya and I arrived.
Then she looked at Rafael’s ring in the evidence photograph and began crying.
“He kept it.”
“Kept what?”
“The codes.”
Sofia explained that she and Rafael founded a workers’ investment fund decades earlier.
Restaurant employees contributed small amounts.
Rafael promised the fund would one day purchase company shares for them.
When our business grew, he hid the account from a hostile investor.
Sofia remained trustee.
The twelve million did not belong to our family.
It belonged to hundreds of workers.
Mauricio found the codes but could not access the account without Sofia’s signature.
He pressured her.
She refused.
Then someone broke into her home.
Nothing stolen.
A warning written on the wall:
RAFAEL IS DEAD. YOU CAN BE TOO.
She disappeared for a year.
The ring was not only evidence of theft.
It was the key to money my husband protected for employees.
Mauricio had risked murder for an account he could not legally own.
Then Sofia handed me a letter Rafael wrote the week before his death.
Elena,
Mauricio has been moving money with Calvin. Valeria is involved. Cross changed my medication after I confronted them. If something happens, do not trust the first story.
My husband knew.
He tried to warn me.
The letter never reached me.
Sofia said she mailed a copy.
The tracking record showed delivery to my house.
Signed by:
Mauricio Robles.
He intercepted it.
Then Sofia gave Priya a digital backup of Rafael’s final conversation with Mauricio.
Rafael’s voice:
“You forged Elena’s signature.”
Mauricio:
“She would have approved.”
“You are stealing.”
“I am protecting what will be mine.”
“Nothing is yours because you expect me to die.”
A chair scraped.
Then Valeria’s voice.
“Rafael, sit down. You’re dizzy.”
The recording ended.
The timestamp was forty minutes before the fall.
Mauricio and Valeria were both inside my home that night.
I had been told Mauricio arrived after I called.
Then the police found another hidden file in the deposit box.
A photograph of me sleeping.
Taken from inside my bedroom.
On the back:
PHASE TWO BEGINS AFTER ELENA’S BIRTHDAY.
May you like
Rafael had been phase one.
I was next.
