Chapter 14 - Caroline’s last warning was about Ava
Months after Charles entered his plea, Rebecca delivered a box of Caroline’s old business papers to Mason.
She had kept them because Caroline’s consulting work had continued briefly during treatment.
Inside was a handwritten notebook.
Most of it covered architecture projects.
Near the back were several personal pages.
One entry was dated eight days before Caroline died.
Charles is escalating because I told Mason we are leaving Newport after summer.
I’m not afraid he’ll physically hurt Ava.
I’m afraid he’ll teach her that love means obedience and fear means respect.
Mason stopped reading.
He sat alone in Caroline’s old office for nearly an hour.
All this time, he thought Caroline’s main fear had been medication.
It wasn’t.
The drugs were one symptom.
Her larger concern was what Charles’s behavior would teach their daughter.
Another entry said:
Mason keeps telling me his father means well.
Meaning well has become the family phrase that ends every argument before anything changes.
That one hurt.
Because Mason remembered saying it.
He said it when Charles criticized Caroline’s parenting.
He said it when Charles entered their home without calling.
He said it when Charles dismissed Caroline’s doctors.
Dad means well.
Meaning well had become permission.
Mason finally understood why Caroline wanted to leave Newport.
Not to punish Charles.
To create distance before Ava learned to confuse intimidation with love.
He took the notebook to Dr. Brooks.
They agreed Ava should not read it yet.
Someday.
When she was older.
For now, Mason only needed to live its lesson.
He sold his share of the Newport residence back to the family holding company under an ordinary negotiated transaction.
He and Ava moved permanently to a smaller home near Providence.
Not because the estate was cursed.
Because Mason no longer wanted architecture doing the work boundaries should have done years earlier.
He also reduced his role in several family social organizations Charles had dominated.
Not as dramatic exile.
As adulthood.
Charles had spent decades making proximity feel mandatory.
