Chapter 8 - Olivia Had Been Trying to Fire Madison From Our Lives

Rachel Finch gave me a folder.

Not secret.

Old business records.

Emails.

Calendar invitations.

One message from Olivia hit hardest.

Sent to Rachel the afternoon before:

her death.

I’m cutting Madison off from every account tomorrow. Ethan thinks I’m overreacting, but I don’t care anymore. She keeps deciding what I need, what Grace needs, what the business needs. I’m tired of being managed in my own life.

I read it three times.

Ethan thinks I’m overreacting.

I had forgotten saying:

that.

Then memory returned.

Olivia and I were in:

our bedroom.

She said:

“Madison has been moving money.”

I answered:

“She says those are reimbursements.”

“Why are you taking her word?”

“Why are you assuming she’s stealing?”

Olivia stared at:

me.

“I’m not assuming.”

“I’m checking.”

Then I said:

“Your migraines have you suspicious of everyone.”

There.

I used:

her illness

against her.

Not intentionally.

Still.

Olivia became furious.

She said:

“Do not use my headaches to tell me I can’t read a bank statement.”

I apologized.

Later.

But then I left for:

Portland.

The next morning she was supposed to meet:

accountant,

Rachel,

bank representative.

Her access was going to:

change.

Madison knew.

Then another email.

Olivia to:

Madison.

Do not come over tonight. We will discuss the accounts tomorrow with Ethan present.

Timestamp:

5:42 p.m.

Madison replied:

Grace asked me to come. I’m not leaving you alone when you’re sick.

Olivia:

I said no.

There.

Clear boundary.

Yet Madison was in our home that:

night.

How?

I had given her:

a key

months earlier.

Did Olivia let her in?

Unknown.

Grace remembered Madison arriving.

Maybe she used:

the key.

Maybe Olivia changed her mind.

No perfect reconstruction.

Then Rachel showed me one more message from:

Olivia.

To me.

Sent at:

8:11 p.m.

I never answered because I was in a dinner meeting.

Please call me before you go to bed. I need you to understand what’s happening with Madison.

I called:

the next morning.

Too late.

That was my blind spot made visible in:

timestamp.

She told me.

I delayed.

Not because I didn’t love:

her.

Because I trusted the existing structure.

Madison helps.

Olivia is stressed.

We’ll sort it tomorrow.

Tomorrow did not:

come.

Then we learned the final meeting Olivia planned was not merely to remove:

financial access.

She intended to end Madison’s role in:

Grace’s life.

Rachel remembered Olivia saying:

“I don’t want her alone with Grace anymore.”

“Why?”

“She said Madison was making Grace repeat things.”

My stomach tightened.

“What things?”

Rachel searched her memory.

“Something about Mommy being sick and Aunt Madison being the one who takes care of everybody.”

Then Grace’s current therapist uncovered a fragment.

At four, Madison had made her say:

“Mommy needs Madison.”

Grace remembered because:

she hated saying it.

The pattern had begun before:

Olivia died.

Madison did not only want access to accounts.

She wanted to become:

necessary.

May you like

And Olivia had finally decided to remove her from every role at once.
