Chapter 1 - THE SEALED DOCUMENT

Michael Reed slammed a thick legal folder onto the hospital reception counter hard enough to make Nurse Emily flinch. “Those three babies belong to ME!” I was six months pregnant with triplets, bruised, exhausted, and seated in a wheelchair because my blood pressure had crashed thirty minutes earlier. My estranged husband looked immaculate in a dark suit, which was typical. Michael always looked best when everyone else was falling apart. He reached for my wheelchair. A tall man in a black overcoat stepped between us and knocked Michael’s hand away. David Kane. Billionaire investor. Hospital donor. And, as far as Michael knew, a stranger. “Touch her again. See what happens.” Michael shoved him. David barely moved, then slapped him hard enough to send him sideways into the reception counter. Michael straightened, stunned. “My lawyers will take those children before sunrise!” David reached inside his coat, pulled out one sealed document, and placed it on top of Michael’s legal folder. “Then tell your lawyers to read this first.” Michael reached for it. Attorney Grant saw the seal and grabbed Michael’s wrist. “Don’t.”

Grant’s face drained white. The seal belonged to the Rhode Island Family Court Special Review Division. He whispered, “Michael, who else knows about this?” David answered, “Enough people.” I did not understand any of it. Then Nurse Emily asked whether I wanted security. “Yes.” Michael laughed. “She’s my wife.” I looked straight at him. “Estranged.” He smiled coldly. “Still legally mine.” That sentence made David’s face harden. Grant opened Michael’s own folder instead. Inside were custody petitions prepared before I had even been admitted. Temporary emergency parental control. Medical decision authority. A transfer request to a private maternal facility. My signature appeared on an attached consent acknowledgment. It was not mine. Hospital legal counsel arrived. So did security. Then David leaned toward me and said quietly, “Lena, before anyone opens that sealed order, you need to know why Michael wanted your triplets moved before sunrise.” My chest tightened. Michael shouted, “Don’t you dare.”

David looked at him. “Your mistake was assuming she would never ask who was paying for the transfer.” Then Grant’s hand began trembling over the sealed order. And I realized the fight was not only about custody. Someone had been planning where my babies would be born, who would control their medical decisions, and how much money those decisions were worth—before I ever knew the plan existed.
