Chapter 8 - Kelsey Refused to Become the Excuse for Claire’s Erasure
Kelsey moved out of Evan’s apartment three weeks after the board reception.
Not because she stopped loving him.
Because she was frightened by how easily he had rewritten reality around her.
She rented a furnished townhouse nearby.
Evan asked:
“Are you leaving me?”
“I’m giving birth in three months.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
Kelsey looked at him.
“I need to know whether you want me or what I represent.”
Evan frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“The new family.”
The words landed.
Kelsey continued.
“Your mother says it constantly.”
“New family.”
“Legacy.”
“Fresh start.”
“Our baby is not a corporate succession strategy.”
Evan looked away.
Then Kelsey owned her own part.
“I had an affair with a married man.”
“I believed what was convenient because I wanted you.”
“I knew Claire had not agreed the marriage was over when we started.”
That mattered.
No excuses.
Then:
“But I will not help you treat divorce like deleting her.”
Evan said:
“I’m not.”
Kelsey stared.
“You literally told her she had no name.”
Silence.
Then the pregnancy.
Barbara had already discussed:
baby portraits in the Whitmore Freight lobby,
future trust shares,
family christening at Richard’s church.
Kelsey said:
“No.”
Barbara was stunned.
“No what?”
“No company event around the baby.”
“No Whitmore Freight nursery gifts from vendors.”
“No trust discussions until I have independent counsel.”
Barbara looked offended.
“You think we would take advantage of you?”
Kelsey answered:
“I think everyone in this family confuses love, money, and ownership.”
Claire heard about that comment through Howard.
She almost laughed.
Accurate.
Kelsey later contacted Claire.
Not friendship.
One email.
I’m sorry for my role in the affair. I’m also sorry I attended that reception believing your exit had already been agreed. I should have asked more questions.
Claire waited two days.
Then replied:
Thank you. I accept that you are taking responsibility. I don’t want a personal relationship, but I wish your child well.
Kelsey answered:
Understood.
Clean.
No sisterhood.
No revenge.
Then Barbara tried contacting Claire indirectly:
“Kelsey is turning Evan against me.”
Claire replied through Howard:
“That is no longer my family problem.”
