Chapter 9 - Dad Was Going to Leave Her

Len Pierce had drafted:

papers.

Not filed.

Dad wanted a separation agreement first.

He had learned about:

the money.

Then found emails where Monica repeatedly described him as:

cognitively impaired.

Then realized she had manipulated:

my departure

from the company.

Dad told Len:

“I don’t know who I’m married to anymore.”

He planned to move:

Monica

out of the Wellesley? Pennsylvania house. Let's localize; family suburban Pennsylvania, so maybe Chester County. Dad's home in Main Line suburbs. Keep simple.

He planned to remain in their house temporarily while finances were:

sorted.

Monica would receive whatever marital rights she legally had.

No instant:

disinheritance.

No leaving her destitute.

They had been married:

six years.

She had legitimate financial interests.

Dad was not trying to steal:

them.

What he was removing:

control.

POA revoked.

Passwords changed.

Joint discretionary transfers stopped.

Company access ended.

Peter barred from business involvement.

Separation filed.

Then Len intended to help Dad formally document:

capacity

to prevent Monica from continuing the cognitive-decline narrative.

Monday.

Again.

Monica found the draft separation agreement.

How?

Dad printed it.

Left it inside:

his home office.

He admitted:

careless.

She confronted him Saturday night.

“Did you have a fight?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

Dad closed his eyes.

“That I was destroying her life.”

“What did you say?”

“That she’d already tried to destroy mine.”

Then:

“She asked whether Claire was coming back to Dawson.”

“What did you tell her?”

“I said I hoped so.”

That was the trigger.

The money.

Marriage.

Company.

Me.

All of Monica’s control was about to:

collapse.

Dad remembered dinner after:

the argument.

One glass of:

wine.

Then feeling:

strange.

Not immediate.

Heavy.

Uncoordinated.

He went upstairs.

Monica helped him into:

bed.

He remembered asking:

“Did you put something in my drink?”

She answered:

“You need to sleep.”

Then darkness.

He woke once on:

the floor?

Maybe.

His memory was fragmented.

Toxicology later detected a sedating prescription substance not prescribed:

to him.

No operational details needed.

The source was eventually traced to:

Monica’s old prescription.

That moved the case beyond:

financial fraud.

Then a search of her email found a draft message scheduled but never sent.

To:

Len.

Richard died peacefully overnight. Given his recent cognitive decline, I hope you will respect the decisions he made with me privately.

Recent cognitive decline.

Even in announcing his death, she had planned to reinforce:

incapacity.

Then investigators searched her calendar.

Sunday:

Richard — transport

Monday:

Len / Dawson control

Tuesday:

Peter refinancing

No funeral planning block.

No grief.

Just:

sequence.

But the most chilling entry was not Monday.

It was Sunday afternoon.

Cremation 4:30 — confirm before Claire arrives.

She knew I might:

come.

She wanted him gone:

first.

May you like

And the only reason she failed was that I ignored her instructions and demanded to see my father before the process continued.
