Chapter 5 - THE DELAYED TREATMENT

The lead nurse, Erin, shifted closer to Holly’s bed.

“No, you don’t.”

Dr. Avery froze.

Derek looked at him sharply.

“What is going on?”

Calvin’s voice remained calm in Marissa’s ear.

“Marissa, do not answer questions. Listen only. The trust intrusion protocol has activated.”

“Trust intrusion?”

“Yes.”

Derek heard enough to stiffen.

Vanessa whispered, “Derek?”

Calvin continued.

“Because Mr. Hale attempted unauthorized access through a sealed medical-expense channel, the trustee review opened a protected escrow log, a guardianship risk alert, and a hospital ethics hold. The door will remain locked until the compliance officer arrives.”

Marissa stared at the door.

The shadow moved slightly.

“Holly’s envelope?” she asked.

“Do not open it yet.”

Derek stepped forward.

“What did he say?”

Marissa lifted one hand to stop him.

Derek laughed, but there was panic inside it now.

“You don’t get to hold my daughter hostage with some old lawyer’s game.”

Holly flinched at the word hostage.

Marissa’s face changed.

Derek saw it and stopped too late.

“She is not leverage,” Marissa said.

Calvin spoke into her ear.

“Good. Keep him talking if you can. Do not let him near the folder.”

Derek looked at his phone.

Another vibration.

Then another.

His hand shook as he unlocked it, angled away from everyone.

Vanessa tried to read over his shoulder.

He turned away.

That frightened her more than anything else had.

“What is it?” she whispered.

Derek did not answer.

Dr. Avery’s face had gone gray.

The nurse saw that too.

“Doctor,” she said carefully, “why are you afraid?”

No one answered.

The shadow behind the frosted glass finally moved away.

Then a keycard sounded.

The door opened only six inches.

A woman’s voice came through.

“Hospital compliance. I am entering with security.”

Derek took one step back.

That was the first smart thing he had done all night.

A woman in her fifties entered wearing a dark suit and hospital ID clipped to her lapel. Behind her stood a hospital security officer and a second administrator carrying a tablet.

The compliance officer looked first at Holly.

Then at Marissa.

Then at Derek.

Then at Vanessa.

Then at Dr. Avery.

“Mrs. Hale,” she said, “I’m Patricia Sloan. Mr. Rhodes notified us of a trust-linked patient protection alert.”

Derek’s voice sharpened.

“This is a private family matter.”

Patricia’s eyes moved to Holly’s monitor.

“No, Mr. Hale. It became a patient matter when financial pressure entered a pediatric treatment room.”

Marissa heard Calvin breathe once through the phone.

Almost approval.

Derek turned to Dr. Avery.

“Say something.”

Dr. Avery looked at him.

Then at Holly.

Then at the sealed envelope.

His shoulders sank.

“I can’t.”

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“Michael.”

Marissa turned.

Michael.

Not Dr. Avery.

Michael.

The nurse noticed too.

Calvin’s voice sharpened in Marissa’s ear.

“Did Vanessa just use the doctor’s first name?”

“Yes,” Marissa whispered.

“Good. That matters.”

Derek stared at Vanessa.

“You know him?”

Vanessa’s mouth opened.

Closed.

Dr. Avery lowered his eyes.

There it was.

Another room inside the room.

Another betrayal folded into the first.

Patricia Sloan lifted her tablet.

“All devices belonging to hospital staff involved in this alert are being preserved under policy. Dr. Avery, you are relieved from Holly Hale’s care pending review.”

Dr. Avery closed his eyes.

Derek moved toward the folder.

The security officer stepped between them.

“Sir, don’t.”

Derek’s phone vibrated again.

This time, he looked down and swore under his breath.

Marissa heard it.

Not the word.

The fear.

Calvin said, “He has received the fiduciary lock notice.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means every account he tried to approach is now frozen against him, and every communication he sent through counsel is being preserved.”

May you like

Marissa looked at Holly.

Her daughter’s eyes were open.
