Chapter 14 - Lily Met Her Grandmother Again Under Rules Vivian Did Not Get to Write
Lily was almost two when Vivian spent time with her again.
Not first contact.
She had seen Lily at:
family events,
Daniel’s supervised visits,
birthday gatherings.
But this was the first time I agreed to:
regular grandmother visits
during Daniel’s parenting time.
Why?
Because Vivian had changed enough to make:
limited trust
reasonable.
Not because:
she was family.
That word no longer ended arguments.
Vivian followed:
boundaries
for more than a year.
No surprise visits.
No medical commentary.
No questioning my parenting through Daniel.
No gifts designed to compete.
When Lily had an ear infection, Vivian asked Daniel:
“Does Hannah know?”
He answered:
“Yes.”
Vivian stopped.
Old Vivian would have requested:
temperature,
medication,
doctor,
diagnosis.
Small change.
Big meaning.
At Lily’s second birthday, Vivian arrived with:
one stuffed elephant.
Not twelve gifts.
She handed it to me first.
“This okay?”
I almost laughed.
“Yes.”
She smiled.
Lily loved it for:
three weeks
then ignored it.
Toddlers are excellent at humbling family symbolism.
Later, Vivian asked whether she could hold Lily while I cut cake.
I looked at:
Lily.
She reached toward Vivian.
“Yes.”
That was how access worked now.
Not:
I am grandmother.
Therefore:
mine.
Ask.
Observe.
Consent.
Relationship.
Simple.
