Chapter 1 - She Flinched Before Victoria Even Touched Her

Daniel heard Lucy crying before he reached the kitchen.

Not ordinary crying. Panic.

He crossed the hallway of the lake house and stopped in the doorway just long enough to understand what he was seeing. Victoria had one hand gripping the back of Lucy’s hair and collar, forcing the seven-year-old’s upper body over the shallow metal washbasin beside the kitchen island. Lucy’s brunette hair and one cheek had hit the water, sending a splash across the stainless-steel rim and the front of her pale-pink dress.

Her nose and mouth remained above the water, but she was terrified. Both arms flailed against the counter as she twisted desperately, trying to get free.

Victoria’s voice was cold.

“Squirm all you want. Maybe humiliation will finally teach you your place.”

Daniel moved instantly.

He crossed the kitchen, knocked Victoria’s hand away, pulled Lucy upright and gathered her against his chest. Lucy clung to his dark navy jacket, sobbing so hard her shoulders shook.

“Get your hands off my daughter.”

Victoria stepped backward but did not apologize.

“She was throwing another fit.”

Daniel looked down at Lucy. Her wet hair stuck against one cheek. There was a faint red mark near her cheekbone and another along her upper arm.

“Lucy, look at me.”

She lifted her face.

Then she said the sentence that changed the room.

“She said you’d believe her, not me.”

Daniel froze.

Victoria rolled her eyes.

“That brat cries whenever she doesn’t get her way.”

Daniel rose slowly, keeping Lucy safely tucked behind his side.

Victoria shifted her weight.

Lucy flinched immediately.

Daniel saw it.

Not when Victoria touched her.

Before.

His anger changed.

He looked once more at Lucy’s arm, then directly at his wife.

“Then why does she flinch before you even touch her?”

Victoria’s face tightened.

Daniel took one step toward her while keeping Lucy behind him.

Victoria backed into the kitchen island.

Her arrogance disappeared so quickly that Daniel understood something before she ever answered.

The scene he had walked into was not the beginning.

It was the first one he had personally witnessed.

He carried Lucy upstairs, wrapped her in a towel and sat beside her until her breathing slowed. When he gently moved a wet strand of hair away from her face, she flinched again.

Daniel lowered his hand.

“Has Victoria done something like this before?”

Lucy stared at her lap.

“She gets mad when you’re gone.”

“How?”

“She grabs me.”

“Where?”

“My arm sometimes.”

Daniel looked at the red mark again.

“Anything else?”

Lucy hesitated.

Then she whispered, “She says if I tell you, you’ll think I’m trying to make you divorce her.”

Daniel stopped breathing for a second.

Lucy kept looking down.

“She said grown-ups know when kids lie.”

Daniel asked carefully, “Has she ever told you I would choose her over you?”

Lucy nodded.

Then she said something he had not expected.

“She said once you sign the house papers, I won’t have to be here anymore.”

Daniel stared at her.

“What house papers?”

Lucy shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

But Victoria apparently did.

And suddenly the old lake house, the place Daniel had always thought of as family history, became the first concrete reason he needed to find out what his wife had been planning.
