Chapter 8 - SARAH’S DOUBLE

The fabricated footage lasted ninety seconds.

A woman with Sarah’s face entered the evidence corridor using Marcus’s credentials. She carried a medical brace matching Sarah’s injured wrist. She looked directly at two cameras, removed the ledger, and left through a service elevator.

The biometric system identified her as Sarah.

The building entered internal lockdown.

Agents separated Sarah and Marcus.

A federal supervisor named Elaine Ward assumed control.

She ordered Sarah detained as a possible collaborator.

Marcus objected.

Ward suspended him.

Sarah sat alone in a concrete interview room while the case reversed around her.

News outlets received leaked photographs of the bathroom.

Then the edited video of Sarah taking the ledger.

Headlines called her a double agent.

Commentators claimed the abuse was staged to trigger a federal raid and steal evidence from the Bennett family.

Vance’s attorney issued a statement describing Sarah as unstable, deceptive, and violent.

Exactly the story Vance had prepared.

The surveillance archive beneath the mansion appeared online in selectively edited clips. Sarah yelling. Sarah pushing Vance. Sarah searching Arthur’s office.

No context.

No bruises.

No threats before each reaction.

Beatrice offered prosecutors testimony against Sarah in exchange for release to medical custody.

Arthur remained silent.

Marcus contacted Sarah through the interview-room intercom after midnight.

“The woman in the footage is real,” he said.

“Who?”

“Her name is Lena Vale. Former contract operative. Facial reconstruction surgery eighteen months ago.”

“To look like me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To use your identity after the investigation ended.”

Sarah understood.

The Bennett network had harvested medical records and psychological profiles. With enough data, they could create convincing synthetic footage, forged documents, and physical impersonators.

She was not merely the public face of the charity.

She was a reusable identity.

Someone planned to commit crimes as Sarah after she disappeared or died.

“Where is Lena now?”

“We tracked the service elevator. She left in a federal vehicle authorized by Ward.”

“The supervisor who detained me.”

“Yes.”

Marcus paused.

“I need you to trust me.”

Sarah almost laughed.

“That sentence ruined my life.”

“I know.”

“What are you asking?”

“Arthur requested transfer to another facility. Ward approved it. His convoy leaves in twenty minutes.”

“You think it’s an extraction.”

“I think Rusk wants Arthur and the ledger together.”

“And me?”

“You are the final problem. As long as you’re alive, the double can be challenged.”

Sarah looked at the mirrored wall.

“What can I do from here?”

“The distress fob transmitted to two receivers.”

“One was Rusk’s.”

“The second transmitter still works.”

Marcus had recovered it after technicians dismantled the casing.

He believed it contained a maintenance channel that Cross used to update location commands remotely.

If activated inside the federal building, it could identify Cross’s current relay.

Ward’s agents would detect the signal.

Sarah would have seconds.

Marcus placed the fob beneath the interview-room door.

“Three taps?”

“Not this time.”

“How many?”

“Hold it until the light turns blue.”

Sarah picked it up.

The black plastic still carried a faint scratch from the bathroom tile.

She pressed the button.

Red.

Red.

Then blue.

The room lights failed.

The lock opened.

Marcus stood outside wearing no tactical gear, only a white shirt and shoulder holster.

“Move.”

They crossed the service hall before backup power returned.

On Marcus’s tablet, the hidden transmitter displayed a location.

Arthur’s convoy.

The relay was traveling with him.

Cross was inside one of the vehicles.

Ward’s voice sounded over the building speakers.

“Agent Hale and Sarah Bennett are armed fugitives. Detain on sight.”

Sarah and Marcus reached the parking structure.

A black sedan waited.

Lydia Mercer sat behind the wheel.

David Mercer’s younger sister.

The woman whose phone call led Sarah to the task force fourteen months earlier.

She looked at Sarah.

“You kept my brother’s voice alive.”

Sarah entered the passenger seat.

Lydia accelerated toward the exit.

Marcus climbed into the back.

The convoy carrying Arthur was six miles ahead, moving south.

Then the tracker split into two signals.

One continued with the convoy.

The other turned east.

Marcus stared at the map.

“There were two hidden transmitters.”

Sarah understood.

“One with Arthur.”

“And one still inside the mansion.”

Someone had returned to the bathroom.
