Chapter 10 - THOMAS CHANGED HIS STORY

Thomas denied the $120,000 was payment for testimony.

He said it was divorce/property settlement from Margaret.

They had separated after prison. Documents? Draft agreement.

Created after transfer. Suspicious.

Then Margaret said:

“I paid him because he lost everything.” Why?

“He was my husband for forty years.”

Then: “Did you ask him to change affidavit?” “No.”

Then Thomas admitted:

“Derek contacted me.” From prison. Through letter. He said:

“You ruined my life because you were afraid of Mom.”

Then: “Tell truth.”

Thomas began doubting memory. Trauma. Years.

Could he have misremembered? Then affidavit:

“I now believe Abigail lost balance before Derek’s hands made contact.”

That was not same as “I saw her slip.” Caroline noticed.

Then: “Did you see?” Thomas: “No.” There.

He had not.

He was interpreting sounds/shadows.

Then Derek’s post-conviction petition overstated.

Court denied without evidentiary hearing on assault conviction, noting Thomas never witnessed actual contact and other evidence remained. Good.

Then why transfer?

Margaret and Thomas truly were dividing remaining retirement assets after separation.

Timing ugly but documented by financial mediator.

No bribery established.

Then Margaret called through lawyer:

“I did not pay him to lie.”

I believed maybe.

Then: “Do you want apology for timing?” No.

Not everything needs moral ceremony.

Then Derek exhausted appeal. Case ended.

Then my wedding with Owen.

I almost canceled.

Not because I doubted him.

Because old wedding? We had no first wedding event described; married Derek maybe normal. My hospital story. Still fear.

Then Owen said: “We can cancel.” No drama.

Then: “Do you want to?” I thought. “No.”

Then: “Then marry me.” We did.

Small courthouse ceremony. Dinner.

No family spectacle.

Margaret not invited. Thomas not. Nicole no. Caroline came.

Maya came? Therapist ethically maybe not social. Better no. Friends.

Then Owen and I created prenuptial agreement.

Some people found unromantic.

I found peaceful. Separate trust. Shared household. Clear property.

Medical decision rights.

No access to trust governance.

Then Owen insisted on his own independent attorney. Good.

Then: “Do you trust me?” “Yes.”

Then: “Then why prenup?”

“Because trust is not a substitute for clarity.” He smiled. “Good answer.” Then married.

Then life became ordinary.

I learned he left mugs everywhere.

He learned I hated surprise plans.

Then one day he moved my laptop while cleaning. I panicked. He froze. “Sorry.”

Then: “It’s okay.”

My body needed time. No shame.

Then: “Want me to never move?” “Ask.” He did. Years.

Then I became stepmother to Owen’s teenage daughter, Chloe? He could have daughter from previous marriage. Need not complicate. Let's say no children.

Then we considered children.

I did not know.

My fall caused no fertility damage.

But I was forty-one. We talked.

Then decided not to pursue. Not tragedy. Choice.

Then: “Are you okay?” “Yes.”

Then: “Will you regret?” Maybe. Life.

Then Eli’s health improved after surgery.

Nicole sent update because I had helped records.

I said: “Glad.”

No further relationship.

Then Derek from prison wrote apology letter. I debated. Read.

“Abby, I spent years saying I loved you and therefore could not be abusive.”

Then: “I understand now those are separate questions.” Good.

Then: “I wanted access to your money.” There.

Then: “I also loved you.” Both.

Then: “I hated that your no could expose me.”

Then: “I pushed you.” Specific.

Then: “I did not plan to kill you.” Maybe.

Then: “I did plan to make you afraid enough to sign.” There.

Then: “I am sorry.” No request.

I kept letter for legal archive then personal? I scanned and gave to attorney? Case closed. I chose shred after reading. Why?

I did not need.

Then Owen asked: “Do you forgive?” “More.” Then: “Specific?”

He learned word. We laughed.

“For saying he pushed me without making me argue.” Good.

Then Margaret eventually died? Not yet. Thomas? We can later.

Then my trust reached value $14 million. Wealth grew.

I asked independent co-trustee:

“Do I even need trust structure now?” We reviewed.

Dad’s protective trust had become adult inheritance.

Could terminate partly.

Court allowed distribution because original purpose fulfilled and I was competent beneficiary? Depending law. Fiction.

I terminated restrictive portions and moved assets into standard revocable/irrevocable plans under my control with independent management. No Reeds.

No dead father’s rules.

Then: “Do you feel safe?” Yes.

Then: “Because money?” Partly.

Then: “Because control?” More.

Then I corrected.

“Because I can choose who has control.” There.

Then one day Caroline announced retirement.

She handed me a box.

Original Harbor National letter.

The one that exposed everything. My name:

ABIGAIL REED — TRUSTEE. I stared. Then: “Keep?”

I said yes. Why? Not trauma.

Proof I opened mail. We laughed.

Then she said:

“You know what always bothered me?” “What?”

“That letter should never have been mailed to your home. The bank had alternate correspondence address.”

How did it get there? System error? Then audit.

Someone changed mailing address two weeks before. User login: Thomas Reed. Why?

Thomas had deliberately redirected statement to my house.

He wanted me to find it. I stared.

The man who stayed silent for years had finally chosen a coward’s version of confession:

He sent the evidence to me without telling Margaret.

Then denied involvement. Why?

Thomas wrote in an old unsent email:

“I cannot tell Abigail. But I can stop preventing her from finding out.” There.

The letter that nearly got me killed had not been random.

May you like

Thomas had cracked first.

And even his attempt to tell truth had made me absorb the danger instead of facing Margaret himself.
