Chapter 9 - THE WRONG VERSION
Years later, the internet remembered a murder attempt and a billionaire rescue. The truth was less cinematic and far more useful.
Twenty years later, the story online was ridiculous.
“Wife catches husband kissing mistress after attempted murder.”
No.
“Billionaire convoy arrives.”
No.
“Secret trophy evidence destroys empire.”
No.
Daniel did not try to murder me.
The trophy strike may have been accidental.
The kick was deliberate.
The affair real.
The financial misconduct real.
That was enough.
I gave one interview to correct.
Why?
Because exaggerated stories help guilty people hide behind falsehood.
If one claim is obviously wrong, they can say all claims were.
Precision matters.
I said:
“The hardest truth was not that Daniel was secretly evil. It was that he was talented, loving in some moments, successful, and still capable of terrible choices when control slipped.”
Then:
“And Vanessa was not a cartoon mistress. She was my friend, my colleague, and someone who chose ambition and resentment over loyalty.”
Then:
“And I was not innocent of every governance failure. I benefited from systems I did not examine.”
That made interview less viral.
Good.
Then young women wrote.
“Thank you for saying you can love someone and still leave.”
That mattered.
Then one founder wrote:
“I realized I use my spouse’s agreement as board approval.”
He changed policy.
Good.
Then Daniel published nothing.
No memoir.
I respected that.
Vanessa never gave interview.
Also good.
Then company anniversary.
Thirty years.
Morgan Vale now just MVD Partners? Could rename. Let's say rebranded Morgan Development Partners, no Daniel name maybe Morgan Vale had Vale not his? Hmm Daniel Morgan and Claire Morgan, "Vale" perhaps father partner. Keep name.
At event, no family speeches first.
Employees.
Then one slide about governance reforms.
No scandal sensationalized.
Just lessons.
Then I saw an old photo.
Daniel and me before everything.
Happy.
I did not hate it.
That surprised me.
Past can remain true without controlling present.
The corrected version never traveled as far as the sensational one.
Claire accepted that.
