Chapter 10 - Okay

That night, after Grace fell asleep, I stood in her doorway and listened to her breathe.
No monitor.
No fluorescent lights.
No glass door.
No Julian in the hallway.
Just my daughter sleeping safely beneath a butterfly blanket, one arm thrown above her head like she owned the whole room.
My mother came up beside me.
“She’s okay,” she whispered.
I nodded.
“So are you.”
That took longer to believe.
But standing there, watching the child Julian once used as leverage become a little girl who knew safety as ordinary, I finally let the sentence touch me.
I was okay.
Not untouched.
Not unchanged.
