Chapter 5 - THE OWNERSHIP TRAP

Mark did not notice.

Men like Mark noticed admiration faster than alarms.

The night of the red wine began as a dinner for six and became a trap for three.

Mark told Elena he wanted to host Chloe because she was “going through a difficult time.”

Elena said, “Your cousin?”

He flinched.

Then smiled.

“Yes.”

“Which side again?”

“Elena.”

“What?”

“You’re doing that thing where every question becomes a deposition.”

She set down the invitation list.

“I’m asking which branch of your family she belongs to.”

He kissed her temple.

“The complicated branch.”

She allowed the dinner.

Not because she believed him.

Because she was tired of suspicion living only in her.

She wanted the room to testify.

So she prepared it.

Hidden audio already covered common areas due to building security consent clauses. Her phone held saved commands for access revocation, inventory seal, and spousal incident preservation. She placed the small black jewelry case containing a replica pearl bracelet beside Chloe’s handbag during dinner, knowing Chloe had admired it earlier with hunger she did not bother hiding.

The real necklace was safe elsewhere.

The replica contained a tracker and an inventory chip.

It was not valuable.

It only looked like something a woman like Chloe would believe she deserved.

The dinner collapsed faster than expected.

Chloe drank too much champagne.

Mark tried to moderate her with panicked glances.

Elena watched both.

By dessert, Chloe had stopped pretending to be distant family.

She sat on the arm of the white silk sofa, one hand on Mark’s shoulder, laughing at jokes he had not made.

Elena asked, “How exactly are you related to Mark?”

Chloe smiled.

“Emotionally.”

Mark stood too quickly.

“Elena.”

There it was.

Not denial.

Interruption.

Elena turned to him.

“How long?”

Chloe answered.

“Long enough.”

Mark closed his eyes.

The room went silent except for city traffic far below.

Elena looked at Chloe.

“Are you proud of that?”

Chloe’s smile sharpened.

“I’m proud that he doesn’t have to pretend with me.”

“Pretend what?”

“That this place suits you.”

Elena almost admired the boldness.

Almost.

Chloe stood and walked slowly across the marble floor, red satin catching the warm chandelier light.

“You float around here like some elegant little wife, but everybody knows Mark built this life.”

Mark whispered, “Chloe, stop.”

She did not.

“You should be grateful he gave you a place in it.”

That was when she picked up the wineglass.

Elena saw Mark’s hand twitch.

He knew.

Maybe not exactly what Chloe would do.

But he knew harm was coming and chose to watch.

Chloe poured the wine.

Clean it up, housewife.

The moment after security entered, Chloe tried to recover with rage.

That was usually her safest direction.

“You’re all being ridiculous,” she snapped. “She attacked my dress.”

Elena looked at the torn red strip on the floor.

“You poured wine on my floor and ordered me to clean it.”

“You tore my gown.”

“You are still covered.”

Chloe looked toward the security officers.

“She can’t lock me in here.”

The security supervisor, Martin Hale, answered evenly.

“You are not locked in, Ms. Bennett. The residence exit is temporarily controlled while potential theft and property damage are documented. You may leave after the inventory review or with responding officers.”

“Officers?” Chloe repeated.

Her confidence fractured again.

Mark said, “No police.”

Elena looked at him.

He swallowed.

“I mean, we don’t need to escalate.”

“You should have said that before your mistress used my floor as a servant bell.”

Chloe’s face flushed.

“I am not his mistress.”

Elena raised one eyebrow.

Chloe corrected too late.

“I mean—”

Mark whispered, “Stop talking.”

The second security officer stepped forward with the sealed inventory folder.

“Mrs. Mercer, the alert flagged a possible match from the west safe inventory.”

Chloe’s eyes flicked to her handbag.

Tiny.

Fast.

Elena saw.

Martin saw.

May you like

Mark saw.

The small black jewelry case beside Chloe’s handbag sat slightly open now.
