Chapter 10 - The School Became the First Place Karen Actually Lost Control
Karen had influence there.
Fundraising committee.
Former parent volunteer.
Donor.
People knew:
her.
That was partly why she felt entitled to confront Lily herself.
The school’s board reviewed:
everything.
The false bracelet accusation.
Anonymous theft complaints.
The DNA letter.
The post-result email about:

They did not publicly shame:
Karen.
They imposed:
boundaries.
She was removed from volunteer roles.
Her campus access became appointment-only for the remainder of the year.
Any communication regarding Lily had to go through:

She could still attend legitimate events involving her own child when appropriate under school rules.
No banishment fantasy.
No mob.

consequences.
Karen called David.
“They’re treating me like I’m dangerous.”
David answered:
“You approached a child repeatedly.”
“I never hurt her.”
“You dumped her belongings on the pavement and called her a thief.”
“I was angry.”
“At nine?”
Silence.
Then Karen said:
“You’re choosing Lily over Ethan.”
Again.
David refused:

“I’m not choosing between children.”
“You are changing his future.”
“Ethan’s future was never supposed to depend on Lily not existing.”
There.
That sentence became central.
Then Karen told him something painful.
Ethan had overheard enough to know there was another:

He asked whether David was going to stop loving:

David had to answer that personally.
Not through Karen.
Not through me.
He told Ethan:
“No.”

“Lily being biologically related to me does not erase the years I’ve been your stepdad.”
Did that mean the trust treated them equally?
No.
Legal structures are not identical to emotional:
relationships.
That distinction hurt.
But lying would hurt:

Then David made an estate change.
Not to punish:
Karen.

reality.
He created a defined personal bequest for Ethan independent of the Hale descendant trust because Ethan had been part of his life for eight years.
He established support for Lily through appropriate estate planning once parentage was formally:

No one was erased.
Karen hated:
that too.
Why?
Because it proved David could care for both children without making one defeat:
the other.
Her whole argument depended on:

Then our parentage case reached formal resolution.
David was legally recognized as Lily’s father.

Not a huge retroactive punishment.
