Chapter 13 - Scout stopped being the only one who reacted first
Daniel changed his own parenting routines.
He became the parent who checked the brake.
Not metaphorically.
Literally.
Before leaving a stroller.
Before putting Noah into a high chair.
Before a carrier went onto any raised surface.
At first Margaret thought he was overcorrecting.
Then she realized he was trying to rebuild trust through boring behavior.
That was fine with her.
He also stopped using the phrase “you’re overreacting” unless he could explain what specifically was disproportionate.
That removed more conflict than any therapy slogan.
Margaret no longer had to spend fifteen minutes proving her emotional neutrality before anyone discussed the baby.
Daniel no longer assumed disagreement meant she wanted access to his personal life.
Their co-parenting improved.
Not because the stroller nearly hurt Noah.
Because the aftermath forced Daniel to recognize something he should have understood from the beginning.
Margaret’s continued presence was not evidence his divorce had failed.
It was evidence they had a son.
Once Daniel stopped treating those facts as emotionally suspicious, Vanessa’s old framing lost its power completely.
Scout remained obsessed with Noah.
That never changed.
