Chapter 1 - NO DADDY

Emily Carter knew her husband was lying when her two-year-old daughter whispered two words into her sweater.

“No Daddy.”

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

Barely even language.

Just a tiny broken breath against Emily’s chest in the pediatric emergency-room corridor, while fluorescent lights hummed above them and scattered hospital folders lay across the pale-blue floor.

Lucy’s small gauze-wrapped hand pressed against her own cheek as if she was trying to hide inside herself.

Emily knelt on the cold hospital floor, both arms locked around her daughter’s trembling body. Lucy wore a pale-blue hospital gown, no shoes, light-brown hair tangled around her face. She was exhausted after emergency treatment, breathing more steadily now, but every time footsteps came down the corridor, her entire body tightened.

Behind them, Travis Carter stormed through the pediatric ER like a man who believed walls should move for him.

Tall.

Dark hoodie.

Dark jeans.

Short dark hair damp from evening rain.

Face controlled enough to seem reasonable if you had not watched his daughter shrink from the sound of his shoes.

Dr. Michael Reeves stepped into his path.

Nurse Sarah Bennett moved beside him.

Emily looked up from the floor.

Her voice shook, but the sentence came out clear.

“Her injuries are not from a fall.”

Travis’s jaw tightened.

The hallway seemed to narrow.

The frightened young nurse by Lucy’s treatment room stopped breathing for half a second. The elderly woman in the wheelchair near the nurses’ station gripped the armrest. A disposable water cup rolled slowly across the floor and stopped beside a file folder.

Travis lifted one hand, palm out, performing calm.

“Emily, don’t start this here.”

Dr. Reeves did not move.

“Mr. Carter, you need to stay back.”

“She is my daughter,” Travis snapped. “Move.”

He reached around the doctor as if he could take Lucy from Emily by force.

Dr. Reeves caught his forearm and stopped him without striking.

Nurse Sarah gripped Travis’s other arm.

Then she saw his face clearly.

Not the side of it.

Not the controlled husband mask.

The full face.

The cheekbone.

The scar near the right eyebrow.

The eyes that went flat when challenged.

Sarah’s professional expression collapsed.

Color drained from her face.

Her hands began to tremble against Travis’s sleeve.

For one terrible second, she was no longer a nurse in blue scrubs standing in a modern pediatric department.

She was somewhere else.

Some earlier corridor.

Some earlier child.

Some earlier mistake that had never stopped breathing inside her.

Lucy looked past Emily’s shoulder and saw Travis straining toward her.

Her breathing sped up.

“No Daddy,” she whispered again.

This time everyone close enough heard it.

Emily turned Lucy’s face gently into her chest.

“Don’t look, baby. I’ve got you.”

Sarah released Travis only after Dr. Reeves had full control of his arm. She took one slow step backward, eyes locked on him.

Her voice came out barely audible.

“Why is he here?”

Travis stopped struggling.

Only for half a second.

But Emily saw it.

His anger did not vanish.

It changed.

Guarded.

Afraid.

A sealed hospital folder slipped from Sarah’s clipboard and landed among the scattered paperwork on the floor.

Emily’s eyes dropped.

The folder had a red restricted sticker across one corner.

A photograph was partly visible inside, face turned away from the audience of the corridor but close enough for Emily to see the outline of a man standing beside a hospital intake desk.

Same build.

Same eyes.

Different name on the top line.

Not Travis Carter.

Dr. Reeves guided Travis several steps away while the additional nurse pressed the treatment-room security button beneath the wall panel.

A soft alert chimed somewhere behind the nurses’ station.

Travis looked toward the sound.

Then toward the folder.

“Sarah,” Dr. Reeves said quietly, “what is that?”

Sarah did not answer him.

She knelt beside Emily, placing her body between Lucy and Travis.

With shaking hands, she closed the folder before Travis could see inside.

But Emily had already caught part of the name line.

Sophie Lane.

Pediatric incident review.

Emily’s stomach turned cold.

Lucy gripped Emily’s navy sweater with both fists and buried her face against her mother’s collarbone.

Sarah looked at Emily.

Low.

Urgent.

“Do not let him leave with her.”

Travis’s face changed again.
