Chapter 5 - Ethan Planned To Turn Himself Into The Hero

When I finally understood Ethan’s plan, its cruelty lay partly in how simple it was.

He intended to find Martha first.

Gain her trust.

Have her sign documents resolving any claim against Dad’s estate.

Then bring her to me.

Afterward.

He wanted to become the man who had miraculously found my missing mother.

He imagined gratitude.

Headlines, maybe.

A family reconciliation built around his generosity.

What I would never know, he thought, was that before introducing us he had already neutralized the financial consequences of her being alive.

He offered Martha what sounded enormous to someone living in shelters.

A furnished apartment.

Medical care.

A cash payment.

Long-term monthly support.

In exchange, he wanted her to sign a broad release stating she made no claim to Charles Mercer’s estate or trust.

Martha did not fully understand it.

She refused.

That was when Ethan changed tactics.

He told her Rachel needed time.

That I had built a stable life believing my mother was dead.

That appearing suddenly could harm me.

Martha believed part of that.

For twenty years she had imagined me growing up without her.

She carried enormous shame.

Ethan used it.

“You don’t want the first thing your daughter learns to be that you came back for money.”

Martha cried when she later repeated that sentence.

Because it worked.

For several days, she agreed not to contact me.

Then Ethan decided proximity might help.

He brought her to our estate pretending she was simply a homeless woman he wanted us to help.

Why?

Because he had one final thing to test.

Would I recognize her?

If I didn’t, he believed he could continue controlling the timeline while keeping Martha close enough to pressure into signing.

The order to bathe her was part arrogance, part calculation.

He expected her dress to come off privately inside the spa.

He did not expect the shoulder of it to slip before we reached the door.

He definitely did not expect me to see the birthmark.

The moment I did, the entire performance collapsed.

That was why he shoved her.

May you like

Not because she was dangerous.

Because his schedule had broken.
