Chapter 5 - MARGARET'S BIRTHDAY GIFT
The transfer to Margaret's account had been labeled FAMILY GIFT. It totaled eighty-four thousand dollars, sent in six installments over nine months. Margaret claimed she believed the money came from Ethan's business bonuses. She had used part of it to renovate her house and pay for the elaborate birthday luncheon.
Rebecca's attorney traced the funds backward. Most came from a home-equity line opened with Rebecca's forged signature. The rest came from the savings account Rebecca created for Grace.
Margaret began to cry, but Rebecca felt no satisfaction. She remembered years of criticism disguised as advice. Margaret had called her ungrateful, oversensitive, and lucky to have Ethan. Yet the older woman's shock looked real.
Ethan denied everything. He said Rebecca approved the transfers and had forgotten because pregnancy made her emotional. The claim might once have worked. Now the bank's login records showed the forms were submitted from Ethan's office computer while Rebecca was at prenatal appointments.
A second discovery was worse. Ethan's consulting company had received payments from a defense subcontractor under investigation for falsified invoices. The amounts were too large to be accidental and too regular to be ordinary consulting fees.
James immediately stepped away from the investigation. He told Rebecca the military connection created a conflict and reported it to the proper inspector general. He would protect his daughter, but he would not use his position to hide or manipulate evidence.
Margaret's first instinct was not remorse but self-preservation. She insisted Ethan had always been generous and suggested Rebecca must have misunderstood the loan. The forensic accountant placed six transfer confirmations on the dining table. Each payment moved from Rebecca's equity line into Margaret's renovation account within minutes of Ethan logging into the family laptop.
The birthday luncheon had cost nearly eighteen thousand dollars. Margaret had praised Ethan publicly for paying the bill. In reality, Rebecca paid for the flowers, the photographer, and the cake served while she lay in surgery. The knowledge stripped glamour from every photograph Margaret had posted.
That evening Margaret returned to her house alone. Guests' gifts covered the foyer, but she could not open them. She replayed years of conversations in which Rebecca apologized for missing dinners, leaving early, or declining expensive trips. Ethan always supplied the explanation before Rebecca could speak. Margaret had interpreted Rebecca's quietness as coldness because that interpretation protected the son she preferred to admire.
In Ethan's childhood room, Margaret found the locked metal cashbox behind old trophies. She almost ignored it. Then she noticed Rebecca's maiden name written on a folder protruding from beneath the bed. The box contained copies of tax returns, hospital forms, military contact lists, and a burner phone wrapped in one of Margaret's silk scarves.
The phone powered on without a password. Messages described Rebecca as 'the access point' and discussed how pregnancy would make her easier to isolate. One message asked whether James Carter still had influence over a procurement review. Another promised Ethan a percentage if he could obtain internal schedules and identity documents.
Margaret sat on the bedroom floor until daylight faded. She understood that she had not merely ignored cruelty. She had provided cover for it. When she called Rebecca, her voice sounded smaller than Rebecca had ever heard it. Rebecca did not comfort her. She gave instructions: leave the room, touch nothing, call Detective Morales, and tell the truth from the beginning.
Rebecca finally understood why uniformed officers had moved so carefully through the house. They were not there to arrest Ethan for being a cruel husband. They were securing government-issued material linked to the subcontractor and preventing possible destruction of records.
Ethan had kept encrypted drives in the home office. He had also photographed documents from Rebecca's old family files, including correspondence bearing James's signature. Someone may have used those samples to create false authorization letters.
The hidden family secret was becoming larger than the marriage. Rebecca feared her father's career might be damaged. James answered that careers could be rebuilt, but trust had to be earned.
That night, Rebecca stayed in a protected guest residence near the hospital. Margaret called six times. On the seventh call, Rebecca answered.
Margaret did not ask for forgiveness. She said she had found a locked metal box in Ethan's childhood bedroom. Inside were copies of Rebecca's financial records, a second phone, and photographs of military identification cards.
