Chapter 10 - THE BIRTHDAY TABLE

Twenty-five years after the party, Lily hosted her own daughter’s fourth birthday.

Small backyard.

No mansion.

No rented status.

No forty-seven guests.

Just family and friends.

A pink cake sat on a wooden table.

I laughed when I saw it.

Lily noticed.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“Bad memory?”

“Old one.”

“Want me to change the cake?”

“No.”

That was the difference.

Choice.

Julian was eighty-three.

He sat beneath an umbrella wearing the orchid pin.

Thomas brought balloons.

Patricia had died years earlier.

Elena was gone.

The past existed without controlling the guest list.

Lily’s daughter ran toward the cake.

Everyone sang.

No one grabbed anyone.

No one filmed humiliation.

No one ranked who mattered.

After the candles, Lily handed me a small box.

Inside was the silver orchid ring.

I looked at her.

“I thought you wanted this someday.”

“I do.”

“Then why give it back?”

“Because I don’t want it to become a destiny thing.”

I laughed.

“Good.”

“Can I borrow it when I want?”

“Yes.”

“Then that’s enough.”

She understood more than most adults in our old family ever did.

Julian raised his glass.

No speech.

Thank God.

Then a breeze moved through the yard.

For one second, the sunlight hit the orchid ring exactly the way it had at Lily’s fourth birthday.

I remembered Julian crossing the mansion lawn.

His face changing.

The first question.

Where did you get that?

That question opened Elena’s disappearance.

Patricia’s promise.

Lily’s DNA.

Northfield.

The kidnapping.

The archive.

The trial.

The trust dissolution.

Everything connected.

Not because fate arranged it.

Because one physical object survived long enough to contradict a lie.

Richard thought humiliation would make me smaller.

Instead, the party put every hidden piece in the same place.

My daughter.

My husband.

Olivia.

Vanessa.

Julian.

The ring.

The witnesses.

The camera.

The moment one person recognized what everyone else had tried to bury.

I looked at Lily.

Then at her daughter.

No dynasty.

No succession battle.

No hidden trust.

May you like

Just cake.

And this time, cake was only cake.
