Chapter 4 - THE BABY SHOWER TRAP

“Not for us.”

But the day of the shower, Julian escalated before the raid.

Because men who believe time is running out often grab for control with both hands.

The baby shower had been Beatrice’s idea.

Of course.

“Even difficult transitions deserve grace,” she said.

That was how Clara learned Julian intended to publicly reposition her before the birth.

Difficult transition meant humiliation.

Grace meant chandeliers.

The living room was decorated in white and silver.

White flowers.

Silver balloons.

A collapsed tower of pale-blue cupcakes.

Wrapped gifts from guests who did not know whether they were celebrating a child, a scandal, or a family performance.

Clara arrived in a pale-blue maternity dress and a calm so thin it felt painted on.

Her hidden phone was placed beside the gifts under tissue paper, connected to Agent Lewis through a secure line. Her shattered watch—her father’s old watch—had been set to vibrate silently at 1:58.

Not because she needed to know the time.

Because panic makes minutes slippery.

Mara had told her, “Anchor yourself. When the watch vibrates, breathe. You only need to stay safe until two.”

Safe.

A strange word.

Julian entered with Chloe at 1:47.

The room shifted before anyone spoke.

Chloe wore champagne satin and carried herself like an announcement.

Julian did not look guilty.

That frightened Clara more than guilt would have.

He looked relieved.

Arthur stood by the fireplace.

Beatrice lifted her glass.

“Family,” she said softly, as if blessing a blade.

Julian walked to the center of the room.

Clara remained near the gift table because Agent Lewis had told her not to move too close to exits if she could avoid it. Exits were where security might interfere. The gift table was near the hidden phone.

Julian addressed the room.

Not loudly.

A performance does not need volume if everyone has been trained to listen.

“Thank you all for coming. Today has become more complicated than any of us expected.”

Clara felt the baby move.

She placed one hand over her stomach.

Julian looked at that hand.

Then away.

“Clara and I are facing private matters. For the sake of the family and the child, decisions will be made in the coming days.”

Clara’s skin went cold.

The child.

Not our daughter.

The child.

Chloe stepped closer to him.

A few guests looked down.

Some looked at Beatrice, waiting to learn the approved reaction.

Beatrice smiled.

Arthur nodded once.

Then Chloe placed her hand on Julian’s arm and said, “We should be honest.”

Clara looked at her.

Chloe smiled.

“I’m pregnant too.”

The room exhaled.

Someone dropped a fork.

Julian did not deny it.

He lifted Chloe’s hand and held it in front of the guests like proof of a merger.

Clara’s watch vibrated.

1:58.

Breathe.

Julian turned to Clara then.

“I didn’t want it done this way.”

That was almost funny.

He had brought his mistress to her baby shower.

But he wanted credit for reluctance.

Clara said, “You mean with witnesses?”

His eyes hardened.

There he was.

The man beneath the charm.

“Don’t do this.”

“I’m not the one doing it.”

Beatrice stood.

“Clara, dignity would serve you better than bitterness.”

Clara looked at her mother-in-law.

“You would not recognize dignity if it refused to sign your invoice.”

Arthur’s face changed.

That was the first real mistake she made that day.

Not because the insult was wrong.

Because it touched the truth too directly.

Julian stepped close.

“You need to stop talking.”

“Why?” Clara asked. “Is Arthur’s library meeting starting soon?”

The room went silent in a different way.

Arthur’s eyes sharpened.

Beatrice’s glass froze halfway to her mouth.

Julian’s hand closed around Clara’s upper arm.

Not hard enough to bruise.

Hard enough to warn.

“What did you say?”

Clara looked toward the gift table.

The phone was still hidden.

Still transmitting.

“I said you should’ve learned who you married.”

Julian shoved her.

The fall became the final piece.

Not because Clara wanted it.

May you like

Not because Agent Lewis needed it.

But because Julian made visible what the documents had shown privately: control, contempt, threat, coercion, and family complicity.
