Chapter 10 - Sole Occupancy

Daniel thought violence would make me leave.
Gloria thought shame would make me disappear.
Avery thought love from a liar would become real if she waited long enough.
I thought marriage meant I should keep trying until every room was exhausted.
We were all wrong about something.
My mother was right about the deed.
On the second anniversary of the night Daniel slapped me, I stood in the apartment with all the lights off except the city glow.
The wooden table sat where the marble one had been.
Warm.
Round.
Mine.
The private elevator chimed softly.
For a moment, memory moved through my body.
Pain.
Glass.
Daniel turning.
Avery’s silhouette.
Then the doors opened.
Lena stepped out holding takeout bags.
“You forgot dinner exists,” she said.
I laughed.
“I was being reflective.”
“You were being hungry with better posture.”
She placed the food on the table and looked around.
“You okay?”
I touched the edge of the wooden table.
“Yes.”
This time, I meant it.
Later that night, after Lena left, I opened the secure property app one last time.
Not because I needed it.
Because I wanted to see the final status.
Ownership: Maya Evelyn Whitaker.
Occupancy: Sole.
Emergency restrictions: inactive.
Access list: updated.
I closed the app and set the phone down.
Then I walked to the windows and looked at the city.
Fourteen floors up.
Glass all around.
No Daniel.
No Gloria.
No lie glowing on the table.
May you like
Just me.
Breathing without asking permission from anyone who confused love with access.
