Chapter 5 - The First Safe Room

Outside the apartment, in the hallway, I stopped shaking.

That was not strength.

That was shock.

A neighbor, Mrs. Alvarez from 4B, opened her door a crack.

She looked at my cheek.

Then at the purse in my hand.

“Do you need help?”

I wanted to say no.

Habit almost answered.

Then I remembered the table.

The slap.

The card decline.

“Yes,” I said.

She opened the door fully.

That was the first safe room of my marriage.

A stranger’s living room.

A cup of tea I did not drink.

A couch covered in crocheted blankets.

Mrs. Alvarez calling my friend Ava because my hands were shaking too badly to scroll.

Ava arrived in twelve minutes.

She took one look at my face and said, “Hospital?”

“No.”

“Police?”

I hesitated.

Ava crouched in front of me.

“Jamie, he hit you on camera.”

“He’s my husband.”

“He was your husband when he hit you too.”

That sentence stayed.

We called the police.

Not dramatically.

No screaming.

No arrest scene in my kitchen while I stood triumphantly beside the table.

Real life is more procedural.

Two officers came.

They viewed the footage.

They photographed my cheek.

They took my statement.

Hunter tried to tell them I had attacked the table first.

The footage corrected him.

Joyce said I had been “unstable since the wedding.”

The footage corrected her too.

Brooke said nothing.

Leonard said even less.

But silence also records itself when cameras are present.

Hunter was removed from the apartment.

Not permanently that minute.

But enough.

Enough for me to breathe.

Enough for the lock to change.

Enough for Claire to file emergency documents.

The honeymoon reservation was canceled.

The wedding photos remained undownloaded.

The marriage certificate had not yet been mailed.

That detail mattered.

Claire looked at me across her desk two days later and said, “This gives us options.”

May you like

Options.

Another word for air.
