Chapter 6 - THE GIRL HE TOOK FOR LEVERAGE

Lily’s car was found outside her school.

Backpack inside.

Phone under the seat.

A security camera showed her entering a black SUV voluntarily.

The driver wore a hospital badge.

Cross had used a nurse Lily recognized from Holly’s ward.

The nurse, Amanda Wells, disappeared too.

Cross was rebuilding control through trust.

Lena refused to let me approach the courthouse annex alone.

We created a tactical plan.

I wore a wire.

Calvin remained with Holly.

He wanted to come.

I told him no.

“You made choices for me before,” I said. “Don’t make this one.”

He stayed.

The annex had been closed for renovation.

Dusty courtrooms.

Plastic sheeting.

No staff.

Cross waited inside a family-hearing room.

Lily sat tied to a chair.

Amanda stood beside her holding a syringe.

Cross smiled.

“Marissa.”

I looked at Lily.

She was frightened but conscious.

“Let her go.”

“After Holly’s trust is restored to me.”

“You have no rights.”

“Judge Vance’s orders remain valid until formally vacated.”

“They were fraudulent.”

“Courts move slowly.”

He knew systems.

Delay.

Procedure.

Technical authority.

Enough time to take a child.

He placed documents on the table.

A parental acknowledgment.

A medical consent.

A trust transfer.

“Sign.”

“No.”

Amanda pressed the syringe against Lily’s arm.

Cross said, “You’ve already seen what one injection can do.”

My body wanted to move.

I forced stillness.

“Why Lily?”

“Calvin believes he is untouchable because he hid behind fiduciary duty.”

“This is about him?”

“This is about everyone who denied me my daughter.”

“You never wanted Holly.”

His face changed.

“You wanted her money.”

“I wanted both.”

“Then why make her sick?”

“Dependence creates loyalty.”

The sentence revealed everything.

He believed care meant control.

Sickness meant access.

Fear meant obedience.

I stepped closer.

“You don’t know what love is.”

“I know what people call love when they need something.”

Amanda’s hand began to shake.

I looked at her.

“What did he promise you?”

Cross snapped, “Do not speak to her.”

Amanda looked at Lily.

Then at me.

“My son’s treatment.”

Cross had trapped her too.

Her ten-year-old son needed an experimental therapy.

Cross offered access in exchange for help.

“Your son won’t be helped if you go to prison,” I said.

“He said—”

“He lies.”

Cross reached for the syringe.

Amanda pulled it back.

That second was enough.

Lily kicked the table.

I rushed forward.

Federal agents breached.

Cross grabbed me by the throat.

I drove my knee into his leg and broke free.

Lena tackled Amanda’s wrist before the syringe fell.

Cross ran toward the back exit.

Calvin appeared there.

He had disobeyed me.

Cross stopped.

“You.”

Calvin stepped inside.

“Let it end.”

Cross laughed.

“You still think you’re the good brother.”

“No.”

That answer surprised him.

Calvin continued.

“I hid the truth from Marissa. I helped Dad buy Derek’s silence. I left Holly inside a lie because I thought money could protect her.”

Cross raised a gun.

No one had seen him take it.

He pointed at Calvin.

“You created all of this.”

“Partly.”

Calvin did not move.

Cross’s certainty weakened.

He needed clean enemies.

Calvin gave him responsibility instead.

Then Lily pulled free and ran.

Cross turned toward her.

I struck his arm.

The gun fired into the ceiling.

Agents subdued him.

Amanda dropped the syringe and surrendered.

Lily collapsed into Calvin.

He held her.

Then looked at me.

“I’m sorry.”

“Later.”

He nodded.

No performance.

No demand for forgiveness.

Just survival first.

Cross was taken into federal custody.

But as agents searched the annex, Lena found a secure server.

It contained live feeds from Holly’s hospital room.

Cross had still been watching her.

One feed showed a hospital orderly entering.

He carried a medication bag.

May you like

The timestamp was live.

Holly was alone.
