Chapter 6 - THE TRIAL

The courtroom was smaller than the mansion living room.
That helped.
No chandeliers.
No cameras allowed publicly.
Claire sat beside prosecutor before testimony.
I waited outside under witness rule.
Daniel in suit.
Calm.
Always calm.
Then financial counts.
Digital examiner.
Forged proxy.
Copied signature.
Scheduled email.
EXIT PLAN.
Then development fee agreement.
Then trustee.
Asked direct confirmation.
Did not receive.
Then attorney.
He told Daniel no authority without signature.
Good.
Then Dr. Wallace.
Admitted summary based on Daniel.
Never met Claire.
Then Cedar Ridge intake director.
Would not admit involuntarily.
Would require Claire consent.
Good.
That narrowed claims.
Then Robert Carter.
He believed Daniel.
Then corrected.
Then Claire.
She walked in.
No bruises now.
No pink pajamas.
Navy suit.
Defense asked about anxiety.
“Yes.”
Panic attacks?
“Yes.”
Therapy?
“Yes.”
Did she once text Daniel:
I can’t think straight right now.
“Yes.”
Then:
“So Daniel had reason to worry?”
Claire paused.
“He had reason to ask if I needed help.”
Then:
“Not reason to answer for me.”
Good.
Then redevelopment.
Had she once supported exploring options?
“Yes.”
Then why reject?
“Because final terms benefited Daniel’s company and I did not want them.”
Then:
“Emily influenced you?”
“Yes.”
Honest.
“She gave her opinion.”
Then:
“Your sister disliked Daniel.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“Could your judgment be affected?”
“Everyone’s judgment is affected by people we trust.”
Then:
“My vote was still mine.”
Good.
Then wellness.
Defense:
“Were you considering residential treatment?”
“No.”
“Did Daniel discuss it?”
“Yes.”
“Did you ever say you needed a break?”
“Yes.”
There.
Then:
“Could he believe you meant treatment?”
“No.”
Why?
“I said I wanted to stay with Emily.”
There.
Then body cam statements.
Then punch at operation.
Defense framed switch as provocation.
Claire:
“I wasn’t there.”
Important.
Then me.
I testified.
Did I enter under false identity?
“Yes.”
Police plan?
“Yes.”
Did I hope Daniel would hit me?
“No.”
Then:
“You wore clothing he associated with submissive behavior.”
“Yes.”
Sounds bad.
Then prosecutor redirect:
“What did you do before he punched?”
“I said no.”
That was it.
Then Maya.
Operation goal.
Evidence.
Safety.
Then Daniel testified.
Risky.
He chose.
He said:
“I loved my wife.”
I believed from back row.
Then:
“I thought she was spiraling.”
Then:
“The documents were to protect assets.”
Then prosecutor:
“Why copy signature?”
He said:
“It was a template.”
Then:
“Why send trustee document as executed?”
Silence.
Then:
“I expected Claire to ratify.”
There.
Then:
“Before or after you told family she entered treatment?”
Silence.
Then:
“Before or after you scheduled email?”
Silence.
Then:
“Did Claire ever enter Cedar Ridge?”
“No.”
Then:
“Was your $2.8 million fee dependent on redevelopment?”
“Yes.”
Then assault.
“Who did you think Emily was when you punched her?”
He looked at Claire.
“My wife.”
There.
No ambiguity.
Then verdict.
Guilty:
domestic assault,
forgery,
attempted fraudulent use of authorization,
one coercive-control related unlawful restraint count? Depending statute fictional. Could say unlawful restraint from prior incident proven by footage.
Acquitted:
one attempted kidnapping-type count tied Cedar Ridge because evidence did not prove intent to confine involuntarily.

Claire:
“She helped me leave.”
Then:
“What saved you?”
“Evidence, police, my sister, and finally believing my own no.”
Good.
Then:
“Do you forgive Daniel?”
“No.”
At that time.
Then:
“Will you?”
“I don’t plan my life around that.”
Good.
Then me.
Host wanted punch story.
I declined.
Then online.
Some call operation reckless.
Fair.
Maya herself later said they would not repeat exact method routinely.
Unique.
Safety.
That nuance.
Then family.
We rebuilt.
The acquittal on the attempted-confinement count upset some people. Claire did not celebrate it, but she accepted it. The evidence showed Daniel planned to get her into Cedar Ridge under a false narrative; it did not prove beyond the required standard that he intended to keep her there against her will once staff required direct consent.
