Chapter 7 - Vanessa Realized Adrian Planned to Dilute Her Too
Vanessa requested a formal interview.
Her employment remained suspended.
She brought her own attorney.
And emails.
At first, her relationship with Adrian had been professional.
Vanessa was excellent at acquisitions.
Aggressive.
Fast.
Willing to call sellers at midnight.
Evelyn respected her talent.
Distrusted her judgment.
Vanessa knew.
Then Adrian told Vanessa Evelyn planned to remove her after Hudson Crown.
Was that true?
Not fully.
Evelyn had discussed reducing Vanessa’s authority.
No decision existed.
Adrian made uncertainty sound final.
He offered Vanessa something Evelyn had not.
Certainty.
President of Aurelia Management Partners.
Fifteen-percent ownership.
A path to more.
Then the affair began.
Vanessa admitted she knew Adrian was married.
No excuses.
She also knew about Evelyn’s health investigation.
She had seen the email about the “closing window.”
No excuses there either.
“Why stay?” Anna asked.
Vanessa looked down.
“Because I wanted what he promised.”
Then she opened another message.
Adrian to NorthBridge:
Vanessa’s 15% works for launch. Future capital rounds should keep control concentrated. Do not promise anti-dilution rights.
Vanessa had discovered it after Evelyn woke.
Adrian planned to dilute her later if necessary.
She had imagined herself his partner.
He considered her useful management.
Vanessa’s anger turned.
Not innocence.
Anger.
Then Anna asked about the hospital.
“Did you know Evelyn could hear you?”
“No.”
“Why slap her?”
Vanessa went silent.
Her attorney leaned toward her.
She answered anyway.
“I wanted her small.”
Evelyn watched remotely.
Vanessa continued.
“For years she looked at me like I was talented but cheap.”
Evelyn felt the accusation.
“Was that true?” Anna asked.
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Ask her.”
Evelyn did not need to be asked.
She had judged Vanessa.
Class background.
Ambition.
Clothing.
Dating history.
Nothing she wrote down.
Plenty Vanessa felt.
That did not excuse what happened.
It explained emotional fuel.
Then Anna asked:
“Why reach toward the oxygen tubing?”
Vanessa’s face changed.
“I wasn’t going to disconnect it.”
“What were you doing?”
“I wanted Adrian to react.”
“Why?”
“To see whether he still cared what happened to her.”
That answer was terrible in a different way.
Vanessa had turned an unconscious patient’s medical equipment into a relationship test.
She never touched the connection.
Hospital staff records supported that no interruption occurred.
Still reckless.
Still cruel.
Vanessa admitted it.
The hospital reported the slap separately.
Prosecutors later charged her with misdemeanor assault.
No serious injury.
No oxygen-related charge.
The corporate review remained separate.
Then Vanessa produced the most important document she had.
A draft of Adrian’s Post-Transaction Leadership Plan.
Adrian:
Executive Chairman.
Vanessa:
President.
Outside CEO:
reports to Adrian.
Evelyn:
Founder Director, no committee authority.
Then a private note Adrian wrote to NorthBridge counsel:
After twelve months, Vanessa can be moved into subsidiary leadership if governance becomes difficult.
Vanessa stared.
“He was going to do to me what he was doing to Evelyn.”
Lucas, attending as observer, said:
“No.”
Everyone looked at him.
“He was going to do what he learned works.”
That distinction mattered.
Then the independent trustee announced preliminary preference for Beacon plus sale of the Philadelphia hotel.
Lower control concentration.
More dilution.
Less related-party risk.
Vanessa opposed instinctively.
Then stopped.
Why?
Beacon gave her nothing personally.
That was exactly the point.
For the first time, her opinion had to exist without a side payoff.
She quietly said:
“Beacon is probably cleaner.”
Evelyn watched.
No forgiveness.
Still a meaningful admission.

Part 8 would bring the financial decision to a head, forcing every major shareholder to accept a rescue that saved Aurelia while making all of them less powerful.
