Chapter 15 - MARLENE’S LETTER

Marlene wrote me three years later. No need to respond. She had moved to North Carolina and rebuilt her design practice.
She wrote: I have spent years trying to decide how much I knew. Good. Then: I knew Dominic was married. I chose to believe “separated” because it made my life easier.
There. Then: I knew your guarantee existed. I chose to believe he had authority because asking you directly would have made the deal harder.
There. Again. Then: I did not know he hurt you. But I had seen enough of his temper to know I was making excuses.
Specific. Then she apologized. No request.
Then one detail. She and Dominic had discussed a future together. He told her after my parents refinanced, he would separate from me because “Elena will finally have enough family obligations to stop fighting.”
I read twice. He planned to leave after loading more debt around me? Maybe.
But email? Marlene attached screenshot. DOMINIC: Once her parents are stable, she won’t blow things up. She’ll be too tied in.
There. That was why refinance mattered beyond money. Entanglement.
If I became primary borrower on parents’ house, leaving Dominic could feel like threatening parents. He wanted one more tether. Then I understood the timing of affair.
He wanted freedom for himself and obligation for me. That anger lasted days. Then passed.
Because plan failed. Not due secret heroism. Because one compliance officer called me directly.
One question. Did you sign? No.
Then I wrote Marlene: I accept your apology. I hope you build differently. She replied: I am.

End. No friendship. No ongoing surveillance.
