Chapter 3 - THE CAMERA

The device inside the smoke detector was not connected to our home security system.
Officer Martinez photographed it and called a detective.
Search warrant.
Chain of custody.
Evidence preservation.
Those phrases entered my life overnight.
Emily and I stayed with Laura.
The next morning Detective Maya Chen called.
The SD card inside the camera contained hallway footage.
The bathroom interior was not visible.
That mattered.
No explicit private footage.
But the doorway was clear.
Ryan directing Emily inside.
Door closing.
Exterior latch engaging.
Then time.
Twelve minutes.
Twenty-three.
Thirty-one.
More dates.
Seven incidents.
My body went cold.
He had lied within seconds of being confronted.
Five minutes.
One timeout.
No.
Pattern.
Some clips included crying.
Some showed Emily pushing at the door from inside.
One showed Ryan sitting at the kitchen table while she called for me.
He did not move.
Then Detective Chen told me several files had been deleted manually.
Forensic recovery might restore some.
One missing date matched the day Emily came home with a bruise on her upper arm.
Ryan told me she fell on the playground.
School records showed no fall.
Not proof of what happened.
A contradiction.
Important.
Then Ms. Daniels gave police drawings Emily had made.
A square room.
A tiny figure.
A tall figure outside.
A speech bubble:
I am good now.
I stared at the paper.
The child counselor had written Emily’s explanation underneath:
“That’s when I’m bad.”
Then Laura asked:
“When did Ryan start school pickup?”
“Three months ago.”
“When did the nightmares start?”
Same month.
May you like
The pattern extended further back than the camera.
And Detective Chen had not yet told me what police found on Ryan’s laptop.
