Chapter 18 - THE WOMAN WHO COULD LEAVE

The advisory board eventually funded emergency relocation grants.
Small amounts.
Hotel.
Deposit.
Storage.
Transportation.
The kind of money that turns “I want to leave” into “I can leave.”
That taught me something.
Choice is partly emotional.
Also logistical.
A person can know a relationship is harmful and still need:
A key.
A car.
A bank account.
A place to sleep.
A lawyer.
Time.
My privilege had mattered.
I had a father.
Income.
A car.
Still, Julian nearly trapped me emotionally and financially.
What about someone without those things?
We built around that question.
No speeches.
Infrastructure.
Then one woman arrived with one suitcase.
Black.
I froze when I saw it.
Same shape.
Same size.
She apologized.
“Sorry, I know this is stupid.”
“What?”
“I only packed one bag.”
I smiled.
“One bag can be enough.”
That was all.
No story.
No comparison.
Her life was hers.
Mine remained mine.
But the image stayed.
May you like
A suitcase is not surrender.
Sometimes it is the physical shape of choice.
