Chapter 5 - VANESSA’S HARD DRIVE

Vanessa was stopped at the private terminal.
She tried to bargain before anyone questioned her.
“I’ll give you the drive if you don’t charge me.”
Claire said:
“No.”
Vanessa looked shocked.
She expected everything to be transactional because Adrian taught her that was how power worked.
The drive contained forty-three case files.
Women.
Men.
Business partners.
Family members.
Some declared mentally ill.
Some declared dead.
Some placed under guardianship.
Some stripped of companies.
One file belonged to Vanessa.
She had not known.
STATUS:
TEMPORARY ALLY.
DISPOSITION AFTER SERENA TRANSFER:
NORTHFIELD.
Vanessa read the line twice.
Then began shaking.
Adrian planned to discard her too.
She had helped humiliate me because she believed proximity to power protected her.
She was another future target.
That did not erase what she did.
But it explained why she started talking.
She admitted Adrian had asked her to provoke me.
He wanted me to hit her.
The mansion cameras would capture a “jealous unstable wife attacking a younger woman.”
I never did.
So he escalated.
Hair pulling.
Restraints.
The call to Dad.
Every scene needed someone to react according to script.
The hard drive included training materials Cross gave Adrian and other clients.
Never strike where cameras are obvious.
Create conflicting witnesses.
Encourage the target to react publicly.
Document every emotional response.
Control medication.
Control transportation.
Control account access.
The material read like a business manual.
Claire said the most disturbing part was how little of it required illegal technology.
Most tools were ordinary.
Phones.
Forms.
Passwords.
Doctors.
Family stories.
The sophistication came from coordination.
That realization changed the investigation. Detectives stopped looking only for dramatic crimes and began mapping who controlled routine systems around each victim.
Then Vanessa admitted she had delivered sleeping medication to my drinks.
“Did you know what it was?”
“At first, no.”
“And later?”
“Yes.”
“Why continue?”
“He said if I stopped, he’d tell everyone I stole from him.”
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
Again.
Truth without clean innocence.
She gave Claire access to Adrian’s encrypted messages.
One thread with Cross:
SERENA STILL WON’T SIGN.
THEN USE THE FATHER.
HE’LL COME IN HOT.
WE NEED ONE GOOD HIT ON CAMERA.
The punch my father threw had been predicted.
Cross responded:
AFTER THAT, BOARD REMOVAL. SERENA CAPACITY REVIEW. TRANSFER FINAL.
The trap depended on my father behaving exactly like the man Adrian described.
He almost did.
Then Vanessa showed us something worse.
Adrian had planned to kill me after the patent transfer became permanent.
Not immediately.
Months later.
A hiking accident.
Insurance.
No direct evidence tying back.
Cross had already written a draft death certificate.
Cause:
Accidental fall complicated by alcohol.
I rarely drank.
The file contained staged photographs of wine bottles in my bedroom.
They had been preparing the future.
Then Claire searched the hard drive for Laura’s case.
One video showed Adrian and his father discussing her.
Charles Vale:
“Alive gives you the shares.”
Adrian:
“Dead gives me peace.”
Charles:
“Peace is expensive.”
They chose confinement.
The network predated Adrian but he had learned quickly.
Then a second Laura video appeared.
She was talking to someone off-camera.
Female voice.
My mother.
Evelyn said:
“If you get out, find Serena. Don’t tell Richard first.”
Why?
Because Richard’s instinct was confrontation.
Adrian knew that.
Evelyn understood years earlier that my father could be manipulated through anger.
She wanted Laura to reach me directly.
Laura failed.
Forensic analysts later discovered the drive had a dead-man switch. If Vanessa failed to enter a password every seven days, the contents would upload automatically to three journalists and a federal inspector.
Adrian had taught everyone around him to collect insurance.
He kept secrets on Vanessa.
Vanessa kept secrets on him.
Cross kept records on both.
No one trusted anyone enough to destroy evidence completely.
The conspiracy survived through fear.
It also collapsed because fear made everyone preserve leverage.
Claire called it the paradox of coercive networks:
The same distrust that keeps people trapped eventually creates too many copies of the truth.
Then Vanessa handed me one final message.
Adrian to Cross:
IF SERENA CALLS RICHARD, MAKE SURE THE EAST DOOR IS OPEN.
I looked toward Claire.
“The east door.”
The one leading to Laura.
Adrian wanted us to find her.
Why?
He had not lost control accidentally.
Laura’s discovery was part of the plan.
Then Claire understood.
If police found a secretly confined first wife inside a mansion legally owned by Serena, and if the husband claimed ignorance, suspicion could shift to me.
Especially with my medical file already labeling me unstable.
Adrian had built another layer.
The house was mine.
The prisoner was inside my property.
My cloned biometrics appeared on east-wing access logs.
He planned to claim I imprisoned Laura.
The evidence was already there.
Then forensic analysts checked the logs.
My biometrics opened Laura’s room twelve times.
May you like
I had never been inside while conscious.
The case against Adrian was about to become a case against me too.
