Chapter 1 - “Ask Vanessa What She Already Knows”

Daniel held the document inches from Claire’s face.
“Sign it, or leave with nothing.”
The private estate office was quiet enough that Claire could hear the faint hum of the ventilation beneath the dark walnut walls. Warm afternoon light moved across the polished black-stone floor and caught the champagne reflection of the desk behind Daniel.
Claire looked down at the document.
Then past her husband.
Vanessa stood several feet behind him in a silver-gray dress, arms folded loosely, wearing the tiny satisfied smile of a woman who had already been told how the afternoon would end.
That smile changed something in Claire.
For months she had known Daniel was lying.
For weeks she had known Vanessa was not simply his “strategic adviser.”
Today Daniel had finally stopped pretending the marriage still mattered.
He wanted Claire’s signature.
Vanessa wanted to watch him get it.
Claire raised her hand and slapped Daniel across the cheek.
The sound cracked through the office.
Daniel’s head turned.
For half a second he stood motionless, stunned.
Then his jaw tightened.
He grabbed Claire firmly by both upper arms and shoved her away.
Claire lost her balance, struck the edge of the walnut desk with one hand and dropped onto one knee.
Vanessa gasped.
Claire barely heard her.
She looked at the hand braced against the desk.
Around her wrist was a gold bracelet bearing the Ashford family crest.
Daniel’s late mother, Eleanor, had fastened it there herself eleven months earlier.
Claire felt a tear hit the back of her hand.
“So that’s what I was worth?”
Daniel’s anger faltered.
Claire looked at the bracelet.
Then made her decision.
Still on one knee, she unclasped it with shaking fingers.
She closed it inside her palm, used the desk to push herself upright and faced her husband again.
Daniel did not move.
Vanessa’s smile was gone now.
Claire opened her hand.
The gold crest caught the warm light.
Then she placed the bracelet firmly on the desk.
It landed with a small metallic clink.
She pushed it several inches toward Daniel.
“Your mother gave me this the night she changed everything.”
Daniel froze.
His eyes dropped to the bracelet.
Claire stepped backward.
“You really never read her final papers.”
His expression changed.
First confusion.
Then recognition of something he had apparently spent months refusing to think about.
Then panic.
Daniel suddenly stepped toward her.
Instead of grabbing her again, he dropped onto both knees.
“Claire… wait.”
He reached toward her hands.
Claire pulled them out of reach.
She was still crying.
She was no longer frightened.
Then she looked past him.
Straight at Vanessa.
“Ask Vanessa what she already knows.”
Daniel slowly turned his head.
Vanessa’s face drained of color.
“Vanessa?”
She shook her head too quickly.
“I don’t know what she’s talking about.”
Claire almost smiled.
“Then tell him why you were in Eleanor’s office the morning after she signed the new trust schedule.”
Daniel stopped breathing for a second.
Vanessa stared at Claire.
“You saw me?”
“No.”
Claire looked at the bracelet.
“Eleanor did.”
Daniel stood slowly.
“What new trust schedule?”
Claire did not answer.
She picked up her handbag from the chair near the doorway.
Daniel moved again.
“Claire.”
She looked back once.
The document he had tried to force her to sign was still lying on the desk.
Beside it sat the bracelet.
“You were so busy deciding what I’d leave with,” Claire said, “you never bothered checking what already belonged to me.”
Then she walked out.
Daniel turned toward Vanessa.
For the first time since Claire had discovered the affair, he did not look like a man protecting his lover.
He looked like a man wondering whether his lover had been lying to him too.
And Vanessa knew exactly which document could answer that question.
May you like
It had been signed by Eleanor Ashford twelve days before she died.
